View Full Version : General Help: Model Identification / Numbers and Letters / AWD???

So I began looking at 2000 – 2003 Audi A8’s. Then I found out that BMW made an all wheel drive model in their 330 (330xi). Then I read all of the great reviews on Edmunds and Consumer Reports. It seems that the only vehicle for me is a BMW all wheel drive.
What I have come to understand is just how difficult it is to find one of these for sale. I only have $10,000 to spend on a car so I’m thinking that anything listed for $12,000 or less is within my reach. Any ideas for other all wheel drive BMW’s?
My second question is if anyone knows of a website that lays out each and every BMW model with a short description of the model and what options it has that differs from the model just below it (like 325 vs. a 330 or “i” vs “ci” etc.).
Thanks for any help,
-matt

All of the AWD cars will have xi after the numbers. I know they make a 330xi, and I think that is the only 3 series car. I know they make a 525xi and am assuming they make other 5 series models in AWD.

A 325xi will be a great choice. 2001 or 2002 is available in that price range. There are TONS of these out there (maybe not under $12,000), not sure where you are checking. They are out there for under $12,000 though.
NUmbers......
128, 328, 528. The first number is the series.
325, 328, 330. The second two in general is the engine size (and trim level to a lesser extent). The bigger then number, the bigger the engine, more power, bigger brakes sometime, more standard equipment sometimes.
i, ci, cic, xi. i=injected (doesn't really apply, just an old tradition). iC= Coupe. CiC = convertible/coupe. iT=touring (wagon) xi=all-wheel drive. ti=touring international (hatchback). These change over the years, so they are not standard from generation to generation at all. is=coupe at one point in older BMWs, then became iC, then nothing.
325 vs 330 in the 2001-2005 range. The highlights: 330 (3.0 liter) had 225 HP and larger brakes. 325 (2.5 liter) had 184 HP and slightly smaller brakes. The 325 had a Getrag manual transmission whereas the 330 had a ZF I think which handled more torque. The 330 was available in a 6 speed manual somewhere along the way and I think most if not all the 325s has 5-speed manuals.

Very good. Thanks for all of the information. Looks like the hunt for a 330xi continues.

FYI, if you were looking at A8's, be aware that a 330xi isn't even in the same size class. The 3 series are competitive with the A4's. BMW's 7 series is what's up against the A8, but there are no 4wd versions (yet?).
Perhaps you should be looking at the 5ers for more accommodating passenger space.
Edit: On second thought, you're probably going to have to stick to 3 series cars because you won't likely find an E60 525xi ir 530xi in that price range, they only came out in '04 (I believe), so prices are still well over $10K.
