To me, its just pointless to take an awesome balanced car... and rip it apart to make it go fast in a straight line. Besides, there are PLENTY of other cars out there that are a hell of a lot closer than the M3 is to be drag ready.

I don't mean to come off as a dick, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

Your ignorance is profound. How many cars come drag ready with a full chassis, four link and 33"x17" slicks?

With a full race car the street car is a donor for the shell only.

Further this is the drag racing forum. Take your elitist comments somewhere else.

I don't mean to come off as a dick, but the M3 is just a sedan. It's not some super amazing sports car either. You can get much better handling, much faster sports cars for less cost that make much better/faster cars on the track. Why would you take a M3 and rip it apart to go fast on the track (think about all of the lame-o people on the forums who ride around without an interior in their luxury cars so they can "go fast") when you could have just bought a Corvette?

Being a fan of Drag Racing and have done some myself I think it is cool when someone comes to the drags that does not have the usual frickin Honda or Mustang. Like all cars they do not last and not all are destined to live forever and most go the junkyard eventually. So why not do something fun. I think its Unique and really interesting. Spice of Life! Hell I am 52 and most folks my age are set in their ways, so you must be much older than I? LOL!

Question; Why the fuel cell in the front?

Don Because the G's during acceleration fight the fuel pump load (not so much on injected cars because of the high pressure). Fuel lines are shorter and the return is closer. Weight being up front helps for traction too. ///J.T.///

As a fellow racer KUDOS.......AWESOME.......WELLLLLL DONE and I have to go take a cold shower now! I have built a lot of cars and my M3 is also my favorite. For those pissants who will just never get it the M3 bodies are intrinsically stronger even before mods than any american piece of trash that I ever ran. the last one was a 671 blown alky burning stroked small block in a 86 w22 package transam that twisted the body almost 6 inches on the first run with frame rail runners and a cage. Not to mention the twisted rear axle, sheared off input shaft, and twisted snout on my aftermarket billett crank. I think they should just shut the hell up or post elsewhere. by the way there are multitudes of super cheap trashed Ms everywhere!

For those pissants who will just never get it the M3 bodies are intrinsically stronger even before mods than any american piece of trash that I ever ran.

Not sure how that applies here...the "body" on GotPSI's car is nothing more than a shell on top of a tubular chassis and doesn't appear to provide any structure (other than some added roll protection).

the last one was a 671 blown alky burning stroked small block in a 86 w22 package transam that twisted the body almost 6 inches on the first run with frame rail runners and a cage.

2 things...

1) Your car was based on 1979-81 technology when the 3rd generation Trans-Ams were designed. A lot happened when it comes to spaceframe chassis design between then and the early 90's when the E36 was built. Even more has happened since.

2) Sounds like the cage could have been much better designed.

Not to mention the twisted rear axle, sheared off input shaft, and twisted snout on my aftermarket billett crank. I think they should just shut the hell up or post elsewhere. by the way there are multitudes of super cheap trashed Ms everywhere!

Methinks the axle and drivetrain problems will show up with even less power on an E36. The FI forum is full of them. We have our own problems with N/A motors run on road circuits without any hard launches.

Let's not kid ourselves into believing that the BMW independent rear suspension is better than a solid axle setup in a muscle car for drag racing.

I enjoy your enthusiasm for BMW's, but I think you could come up with a better argument for them without needing to call anyone a pissant.

Very Very well done. The point of my last post here is that any one should build what they want with what they want. Nothing is perfect. And really, the older 3s arent worth much any more. Just like the trans am. Way too many people were angry back then that I took a supposed collector car (they only made 30 of them) and built a car out of it. Dont consider that it was basically trashed when I started on it. This looks like a perfect home and use for this old 3. the design and application of the build looks impressive from every angle. very well done intake manifold. I hope to follow this build to the end.

I will re glass the rear portion back on the side extensions, then seperate it at the middle. that way I can take off the corner boomerang to remove the tire. I cut out the bottom of the rear bumper as not to add to the wind restriction (have to remove most of it anyways for the wheelie bars). I will have some pics after this weekend. Pretty hard to throw side money at it right now due to wifey out of work, so I have been working on side jobs for my customers. This leaves little free time for the racer. It will run at a track near us this year. ///J.T.///

Is that a Chassis Works frame, or did you fab it from scratch??

What rearend housing are you using??

Has your caged passed for NHRA licensing?

In the end, one bad ass looking machine no matter what the hates are saying. Im glad you are using BMW Power unlike most of the Aussie guys I've seen using rotory power.

I assumed that a drag car would be an ideal application for running off a battery.
What weighs more:

A: Battery
B: Small alternator

Also, it's easier to deal with. Who wants to wait around while you're charging a battery? There aren't always available power outlets at a track. It's also nice having the higher voltage that an alternator provides.

Hmmmmm! 2 fans,4 pumps,INJECTORS,ignition, wastegate contoller, transmission contoller, data recorder, lineloc, trans brake not to mention lights and gages. That is a 100 amp alternator. I will run only 1 battery the alternator is 1/2 the weight of a second batteryand will be better than 2 batterys. Instead of the battery supplying for everything it will now be there for surge protection. ///J.T.//

Actually the when the rear rails are high the depth will be less on the tub. At ride height I try to get 5 to 6 inches of tire clearance. This will allow for tire growth and compression of the shock on the leave. ///J.T.///

I will concentrate on getting better parts for the motor (cams ,lifters). I will take my time to wire and plumb it . The show season will start in a couple of months and an unchipped and clean car will go far for throphies and media coverage (magazines). I will get it to run and start tuning but the full potential will be displayed early next season. I have been working on it for 2 years so a couple more months will be a drop in the bucket. JT, could you post pictures and briefly explain your dry sump when you get to it? If you don't mind, it would help me with a build I am planning out right now! Thanks!

Nevertheless, superior work so far. We've been talking about this build at work, even with my boss who races dirt track!

Hello? LOL I'm still here! I'm super busy on customers cars making some money to buy more parts. I am almost done with the rolling chassis (final assembly). All the interior is done, windows are in except the drivers (I cracked it installing a screw too tight). All I have is brake lines and start installing the engine and trans management. I have upgraded the oil pump to a 4 stage from a 3 stage.I upgraded the fuel system to dual staged injectors, mechanical pump, bigger regulator and ECU upgrade. I cut up the manifold I made and changed it to a single throttle body. (I have my ITB's for sale)You guys can imagine how much money all this is setting me back. I'm in the 6g range so far,but it will be worth it when it runs. So far so good anyone up near Chicago this holliday stop by and check it out . Don't be strangers. ///J.T.///

Sorry I haven't been been posting lately. A lot has changed and spending lots of money. I finally broke under the pressure and did a fuel computation per lb of air vs HP. You guys need to do that just to open your eyes on what it really takes to do the job. I changed the fuel pump to a mechanical (Enderlie) the regulator will be a Aeromotive unit, I am installing 6 more injectors in a staged configuration. To fit the injectors I had to cut up the old mani and scrap the ITB's (they are for sale) in favor of a single 90mm Acufab Throttle body. New twin fuel rails The fuel pump will be driven off the back of the dry sump oil pump. The oil pump was a 3 stage unit now upgraded to a 4 stage unit. One pump, 3 scavenge circuits (2 in the pan one off the back of the head). Then I need to send the ECU back for the upgrade for the dash and the extra drivers for the injectors. This surely hurt the budget but I am tooo far into this to half ass it. That would only mean trashed motors. I figured I will build an injector flow bench with the extra pump and regulator I now have. I built a PWM to run the injector(s) into a graduated cylinder. This way I can make sure they are matched. Otherwise I am still assembling the body (does it look fcukin great BIG TIME) I have an idea that I might show it at COBO hall at the Detroit World of Wheels show (maybe) . I will for sure show it at The Chicago World of Wheels show in March. so far so good If anyone is stopping in chicago for christmas look me up for some getaway from the family time. LOL ///J.T.///

Well I don't have any pics YET, maybe tonight. We are celebrating Christmas today with the family so well you know. Written update is: I got the stainless down pipe polished (stunning), Turbo inlet is out for polishing, all the windows are in and done, seat is in and trimmed for the belts, belts are in(5 point rotary latch),all the wheels were re-polished,steering rack was final welded and installed, pre alignment done, throttle pedal was made and installed, coils installed, dry sump tank fittings welded on and tank installed in car, dzuses installed in the rear bumper(s) then installed on car, Racepak IQ3 digital dash installed, fire system started to install, intake was scrapped and cut up to make the new 12 injector single TB version, installed fuel pump drive on the oil pump, purchased new fuel pump/regulator,made an injector test mule. Actually this is just a short list as there are soo many things behind the scenes that take time but are so trivial. At this point it looks more like a show car than a racecar. People who know me can tell you that is not me. Thanks guys I'll get some pics soon . ///J.T.///

I'm sure it helped the flow some. I have some pics I can post tomorrow if you like.

Washed and painted the block ,washed the crankshaft, installed the crank in the block. Timing chain cover installed, balancer, trigger wheel, rear seal, main girdle and front engine mount done. Decent night started at 8:30 done at 1:30. Work might be rough in the morning. LOL ///J.T.///

LOL Sorry Kenny (I love ya man). It just made sense to build the car to accept any combo. Heck I built the car to fit a small block THEN made the Bimmer motor fit. ///J.T.///

JT thanked us for coming out and spending the day helping him with his car. However, it was our honor to see this truly awesome machine, and the pride and joy that went into it's creation.
