I'm thinking of getting some new wheels and tires for my, going to a 16" style 4.

My question is if the stock tires outside diameter is 647.18mm and the new tires 688.34mm, is that a very serious problem?

And what type of difference could I be looking at in terms of accuracy of the speedometer.

TIA

Oh and also, is $350 a good price for these in good condition with good tires?

kind of off topic, but the bigger the tires then the "slower" the spedo right?

Oh and the new tires are 235-60-16. Is that going to be way to big for the e34. It's not lowered at all?

yea, that seems big. unless 60 on a 15, is the same as 60 on a 16. I am rocking 60's right now.

Yeah, I'm thinking it might be a little too big too. There is plenty of clearance around my current tires though.

But I checked with a couple different tire size sites and they have different information for me on diameter sizes and those sort of figures.

So here is a comparison for these tire sizes. The tires currently on my car are on the bottom row. The new set would be the top.

Sorry for so many responses to my own thread. I just need to let the gentleman know by tomorrow.

Any sort of info would be great. Thank you.

anything over 3% difference is not recommended generally.

+1

The recommended tire size in 16 inch for the e34 is 225/55. Im pretty sure the 235/60 is going to rub all over the place...

Yeah. 6% is quite a bit different

It sucks, I've been looking for a set of wheels and tires I could afford since the beginning of summer. And these ones are awesome, close, and relatively cheap (at least I believe so). So it is really hard to talk myself out of them!!:mad

But it kind of sounds like I should hold off. I think I'm going to measure some clearances tomorrow and call him back to make sure of the tire size, but I guess it doesn't look so hot :(

I love the style 4 look though....

just be glad that you don't live north of the 49th. Take any tire price in the US and double it!

At least I can be happy about that one.
But if Obama wins, I may just have to move to Canada

Both McCain/Palin and 235/60 are a bad idea.

You should be looking for snow tires and I hope you like shoveling snow.

I know the common 16 inch tires are either 215/55/16 or 225/55/16

But from what it seems like to me, 215/60/16 should be fine too. Is that a reasonable inference?

Thanks!

Are you running these tire sizes thru a tire calculator that you can trust like http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

If you input the origianl e34 tire size at the top...you can then put in all the other tire sizes and compare them. If you go over 3% (+/-) you will get a warning as well as other specs like comparative cirucumference, diameter, width, speedo measurement etc.

If you like the Style 4 wheels...go ahead and purchase them...all you need to do is change the tire to the correct size. The style 4 wheel can be mounted with the 235/60/16 tires (sounds like a 7 series wheel/tire combo)...or can be mounted on an e34 with 225/55/16 or 215/55/16 or 215/60/16.

I agree with what someone mentioned above...if you're going to be driving this car thru the winter...I'd be looking at mounting 15" snow tires on the rims you have now...and be saving up over the winter to get a new set of spring/summer/fall tires & wheels. A set of dedicated snow tires will change your entire winter driving experience in your rear wheel drive e34.

I'm HIGHLY recommending dedicated snow tires...for a safer and less tense winter driving experience. You'll not only get improved traction...but increased braking and much better handling when the temps start to consistently stay below 45 degrees and the cold & wet, or cold & dry conditions become an everyday occurence.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah I have been using one from miata.net. The difference was 1.7% with the 215/60/16. I was just confirming because I have been pretty overwhelmed with all of the research I have been doing. Just making sure I wasn't making a stupid mistake.

Honestly id look for 17 or 18" rather than 16.Just because 16 is barely an upgrade compared to stock. You will get sick of those wheels in a month guaranteed.IMO
