So I bought a Mini starter for my 87 635CSi. It it the stock starter from the 735(with the M30:D)M5's and M6's. at first I was scared I was gonna have to remove the manifold.... I Don't see that being nessesary. It only took me 30mins to get the starter unbolted and another 15-20 mins wreastling with it to get that Tub-O-Lard out of the car:mad. it took about 5 second to get the small one in and inplace. another 10-15mins bolting it up and 2 mins connecting the wires(you have to replace the end on the little wire). so I got in the car and turned the key and started the car and OMG it sounds SO much better:D to just sounds like a newer bmw when it is cranking:eek:. If your starter goes out go get the Mini:buttrock
I believe the starter is stock on:
e28 M5
e24 M6
e32 735

when you turn the key... nothing happens
there's usually no warning.. it just starts to not work
mine became intermittent.. it probably was the silenoid and not the actual starter motor itself.. but I figured if I'm taking it out to fix the 'noid, I might as well upgrade to the slimmer starter
that starter also is the one on the 1991 E34 535.. that's what I requested when I bought mine.
plus.. looking at that starter and the one on my E36's M50.. they appear to be identical and I bet they would swap

This is great info. I was looking at the starter while doing the clutch and was thinking about what a hassle it would be to replace........

I thought it was gonna be a tremendous hassle myself.. but because of the great info handed out here and other boards, I managed to get mine replaced in about 45 minutes total from start to finish.
That 19mm boxend wrench that comes with the trunk toolkit was the single most important tool of the job.
