depends on your intent.
If you want to look fly, ZHP sedan is by far the hottest ever.
If you want sheer driving pleasure, e36m.

E46 ZHP (we have one in our family and I have spent a lot of time behind the wheel) is a more modern version of the E36 M3 sedan IMO. I like the looks, interior, quality and handling. Note, I have always found the E36 M3 rather boring looking. The peakiness of the cam'd M54 is fun also.
I think an automatic is a big hindrance to this vehicle, which we have (mother's car) and funny enough it just was replaced under CPO at 62k miles...go GM unit. I would take a ZHP with a manual over the M3, change the electronic throttle to cable and maybe install an LSD...grip with the 255/18's out back is pretty impressive and even without a LSD it will get the rear end out when really being pushed.
