View Full Version : Winter tire wear: Worse than all-seasons?

I have a set of Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22s on my 16" E38 Style 5s for this winter.

I've gotten great treadwear out of my Falken ZE-912s (17k rears, probably 30k fronts).

Since winter tires are of a softer compound (right?) and have less of a contact patch (right?) don't they wear faster than a comparable all-season?

They're going on when the temps get to freezing at night, and coming off in April when the temps rise above freezing.

I think the winters wear faster but have no proof to that.

They actually do, that is their downside. That's why it is wise to take them off as soon as the weather gets warm.

yes winter tire wear quicker compared to an ordinary tire. the winter tires are made of a much more softer/gummier rubber.

Winter tires last a long time as long as they aren't driven on in warm conditions, at that point you can kiss them goodbye. They are a much softer compound so it's like burning through tires in an F1 race.

Ideally you should put snow tires on from first snow to March. Most people do this from Nov-April/May, and those later months is what kills the wear. Don't ride on winters in +12 degrees Celcius in April is my point.

blizzaks are one of the best for winter traction (speccially on ice) but that makes them even WORSE on the tread wear. I have had blizzaks and continentals and dunlop winter tires probably best for wear is the conti's plus they are cheeper than the blizzaks.

The winter tires only wear faster when the temps are above 45 degrees. With the colder temps they will have comparable wear. The problem with tread life on winter tires is they can not be worn down to 2/32" and have them work. Winter tires need to be replaced at 5 to 6/32"

what is 6/32 and how this is measured?

It is the tread depth. There is a wear bar indicator in the first groove of the tire and it is at 6/32". You could have a tire store measure it as well.
