I was doing a oil change yesterday and wondered why I didn't
think of this earlier.
When removing the oil filter its not easy to hold the canister and turn the bolt.
Well, how about this,

Loosen the top bolt finger tight.
LEAVE WRENCH ON BOLT (BOX END)

BOLT NUMBER 5

crawl underneath the car and twist off the canister.

That way you are already holding it upright and just bring it out
from under the car.

Now, as for ease of reassembly......... haven't got that yet.

I have also heard of holding a plastic bag under the canister and letting everything drop into it, including any oil spillage

This is one area that could have been made just a little simpler. I wonder how many 6's have been rendered inop during an oil change. My plan of attack, I place an elevated box, coffee can, what ever, that has a firm surface under the car were I can loosen the canister & lower it from the engine bay. The canister is doing a balancing act until retrieved.

Upon reassy, I place it back under the car on whatever I'm using & reach down from the top to pull it back into position.

Haven't made a mess, yet.
