I'm referring to my 2006 330i sport package

When I open the door sometimes (with the car off), I hear some motorized sound or something. Sounds like something is extending/retracting, but I can't identify what it is?
Anybody know what this sound is?
Also, You know the menu you can access via the turn stalk to change settings - well I can't seem to find the settings for daytime lights, lock/unlock settings, etc. I can only see service info, date/time, and formats and measures.
Any ideas?
Thanks

The menu for the settings you aren't seeing is probably because you're trying to access the menu while the car is in drive (tisk tisk! :p). Put it in park and it will be there.
The noises when opening the door... yeah I hear those too. I hear even more crazy electrical and mechanical noises when I shut the car off. I'd guess delayed cooling fans, fuel pump, the HVAC system closing itself off, etc but I really don't know I just know it does sound very strange and I've never heard any other car make so much noise after being shut off or after opening the door.
Oh I guess one other noise could be the seat moving into position if you have it setup to recognize each key fob as a different driver but you'd probably know it if it was that.

Do you have to put it into neutral with a manual, or does it not matter?

I am not sure about MT, but with AT, your car can be in drive or whatever but it has to be STOPPED before we can access the settings menu with your signal stalk.

I asked a similar question recently. See forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=13851111 (copy and paste in your address bar - I apparently don't have privileges to post URLs yet). No one appeared to have an answer at the time.
One thought I had was maybe it could be the lock for the gas cap engaging and disengaging. Although, I don't know why it would do this when you open the door.

I tried this and I still don't have settings for daytime lamps, locking/unlocking, etc.

I think some earlier MY06 models didn't have those, not 100% sure though.

The power seats may be repositioning. Each key fob has it's own memory for customized seating position.

Can't be for me - I don't have power seats and I still hear the noise.

It's the fuel pump priming. Our Q7 and old Toaureg did the same thing.

Cars are so much smarter than me now that I don't even question when they do weird stuff like that.
Better to have the fuel pump working when you aren't using it then to have it not working when you need it.... HPFP ftl

That is correct. a 2006 car built prior to September 05 cannot be accessed via the stock. you must go to the stealership and pay 1 hr labor to change things.

That is BS considering my owners manual says I should be able to do it.
Couldn't they just apply a software update that would allow me to do this myself like other 2006 330i owners?

Nope, It is the computer itself, and NO retrofitting will be accomplished. We are stuck. The entire wire harness that goes throught the center of the car would have to be replaced also, basically totalling the car.
