my e36 engine is cutting out suddenly. The engine would just STOP, all the warning lights comes on like when you first turn your ignition. I shut off the key and try to re-start it, the engine just cranks but would not start. I wait 2 mins and do it agian and the engine starts after some stumbling. I drove it 25 miles home and no problems. I changed the fuel pump relay but it still do the same thing. Have this happened to anyone else? dying fuel pump? Fuel pressure regulator? crank sensor? OBC code malfunctioning? fuel filter is 1 month old.

Most likely a main relay or the crank sensor.
+1 Any CEL's? I have a Peak tool if you need one...

no CEL, when I got the engine to run, everything was normal. Its sitting in my garage now and it will not start at ALL. cranked it 6x and no fire. I am going to test the fuel pump. I brought a new pump anyways, should be here by this weekend. thx on the Peake, I got 1 2

Replace the Fuel filter!!! Same thing happened to me a while back. The car randomly shuts off at any point with no symptoms of anything, and it won't turn back on until you let it sit for a little while.

After checking the DME, Main system relay, main fuel pump relay, all fuses, fusable link at battery, immobilzer relay, and finally the CRANK POSITION SENSOR. It was a BAD CRANK POSITION SENSOR that caused the no start. If the DME don't get the crank signal, it will not open the fuel pump relay either.
