that wheel nut was a freaking cinch dude...i was prepared for it to be a PITA to loosen up so i put a little extra ass (cuz i have plenty to spare) into it and to my surprise i had to catch myself before the concrete did. as far as the bearing itself, i took mine to where i went to school for machine shop yesterday. my old instructor was more than happy to let me use the press out there. so it wasn't TERRIBLE...i just tore the entire trailing are off my car and carried it out there and went to town...

one thing...it still acts like there is some play in the bearing...like..the hub still wiggles just a cunt hair...granted its NOTHING like what it did in that video...but still worries me a little bit. i guess i'll find out when i put back down on the ground and get it rolling.

lucky you had a press. i had to do mine with a freekin dremel drill. but i think you will always have a little play in the bearing untill some load is forced on it

ducky328i
09-30-2008, 02:12 PM
i hope so...it really wasnt that bad of a job with a press and the trailing arm completely off the car. i did have to cut the inner race off the hub though...that wasn't very fun...

Did the play go away when you torqued the hub nut?

When you torque it the plat will go away--assure you stake the nut to keep it from backing out.

cool. what do you mean by stake the nut?

After torquing the hub nut, you need to hit it with a small drift or flat-head screwdriver to lock it in place. There's 2 indents in the spline shaft made for this purpose.

IIRC my wheel bearing didn't have any play once it was seated correctly; I remember I over-pressed the hub in and there was play, so I carefully backed it out and the play went away. I too was very paranoid about the whole job; the last thing I wanted to happen was the bearing to be seated incorrectly and then die prematurely (again)!

there are the little tabs you punch in on the nut, they prevent the nut from coming off.

m2pc
10-07-2008, 01:36 AM
Are you referring to the upper ball joint on the rear trailing arm? If so, I just used two 1/2 drive sockets, put my foot on one (laying on the ground under the car) and used a long breaker bar on the other one, then torque it like crazy until it comes off.

If you're worried, soak them for a couple hours (or overnight, it works wonders!) with some PB blaster or WD-40. Just spray it all around so it soaks into the threads. These are crush nuts and stretch bolts, so they'll be a pain to get off.

Just wait until you're re-assembling it and have to torque them again to 76 ft/lbs by hand. I literally thought my arm was going to fall off when I did mine! :eyecrazy

well, while thats a possibility still, i have to get on the nut and get enough torque on it to break it loose. Pelican parts say to go in from the top...is that how you guys did it?

here is the car as it sits right now...i got about as far out the driveway the second time as i did the first time before the fluid hit the ground...best i can tell, its coming from one of the actual connections to the rack now...

its a little bit lower than it sat on the blown out 265k suspension...but its pretty stiff now...it doesnt rock hardly at all when i push down on it. i cant say it drives better cuz ive only driven it about 10ft forwards and backwards..:(

my next plan? pull a tony and just fucking delete power steering :mad

Finally someone on my side LOL... I wouldn't have thought of it had we not just had some crockpot meal with leeks in it.

Ducky, do what I do, stick the kid outside (in the shade and away from flying sparks, etc.) and let him watch you fix your car. I stick both our kids in a double stroller while I wash the car, change the oil, etc. They love it! :D

Heck, he'll probably be inheriting the car someday, gotta get him started on it sooner or later! :buttrock

when my son was younger I put him in that damn swing, I got the battery operated one so I would not have to wind it. He would just sit and enjoy:buttrock

first of...my kid is a girl, and secondly, she's teething...so no happily sitting there playing with keys on a ring while daddy works...more like...neighbors calling DHR cuz fat guy next door is crawling around under crappy BMW while his neglected daughter sits in a swing crying....:(

Hmm, teething kid = no working on BMW :nono (and no sleep either!) :(

It's funny, the kids do great but then want to come out at the worst possible time, like when the car is all rinsed and the sun is starting to dry the water and make water spots! :(

You need a babysitter so you can have some "alone time" with your car, LOL :lol

so...after a week or so of just walking back and forth past my car in the driveway, ignoring it, and putting it off out of frustration...i crawled back under it today and got the banjo bolts out of the steering rack and ran around town for pretty much the rest of the day looking for new crush washers...wtf...out of all the rinky dink places in my town no one had a fucking crush washer big enough..oh well...so what do i do? call the stealer...they had them so me and the wifey made it a date...drove 40 miles to the stealer in huntsville, had a nice dinner and meant to go watch a movie while we there (no theater in my town) but we got sidetracked at a store where she bought a sexay new dress for like $20 bucks and some other junk...i got a new pair of vans for $25...no complaints...:)

anyways...hope to put all the PS shit back together in the morning...im kinda past motivated on getting it fixed so im not moving fast...im honestly just kinda pissed at it more than anything...but i did splurge and by it an SSK...:devillook...anyways...hope it'll have a non-leaky PS system tomorrow...

oh yeah...did i mention it didn't get above 40* here all fucking day?! fucking cold as balls...

I've been away from here lately, but if the crush washers were not too badly damaged then you can gently heat the washers with a blow torch to soften them up and re-use them, old school trick :D

I'd also be checking inside the steering rack boots for any signs of fluid, snip the metal clip off and pull the boot back, any fluid in the boot is a bad sign the rack is on the way out, if good then zip tie the boot back on and celebrate with a beer ;)

How was the wheel bearing after you tightened the nut? any play? and did you remember to peen the end of the driveshaft nut over?
Also, how easy did the hub flange(bit wheel bolts to) go inside the bearing? it should have been a tight fit all the way down

Good Luck man. These babies truly know how to push all the buttons. There have been multiple occasions with me where my wife will come out side because I have been swearing so loud someone has complained. Gotta love it.

on the short drive i got to take it one without PS, it didnt shake at all...when i actually pressed it back on, i was pretty nervous because it actually still had a little play in it, but once it was back on the axle it was pretty tight. and yeah i peened the nut.

and yeah the flange was a tight fit...it was a press fit like it was supposed to be. but i took my entire rear trailing arm to where i went to school for machine shop and i used their press so it wasn't that hard at all...worst part was cutting the inner race off of the hub...

worst part was cutting the inner race off of the hub...I find a angle grinder very useful for this, you create a flat, get it as close to the hub centre as possible, then using a sharp chisel strike it with a hammer and it cracks the race, leaving you to slide it off, takes three minutes :alright

good one for any others here to remember :)
