View Full Version : 98 323is clunking sound
My wife and I purchased a 98 323is Thursday. When hitting a dip while accelerating or accelerating going up an entrance ramp or even accelerating aggressively their is a clunking noise from what appears to be the front left side. I thought it could be the exhaust system until I read a few threads concerning the sway bar or engine mounts.
Any suggestions??

Front left side?
Probably a blown strut. Best advice, jack it up (On jackstands, securely) and start try to move the wheel. If you can make it clunk, trace the noise down. I'm going to guess it's a blown strut, but it could also be bad tie rods.
Expensive? I'm going to the dealer tomorrow.
The motor mounts were bad.
I need to install the right fog light lens (1998 323is). Can it be replaced from the front or does the fog light assembly need to be pulled out? Does anyone know if there is a link that has a diagram posted?
