I'd like to remove the leather cover from the pad seat (lower seat) and have the upholstery shop replace a section that's cracked/worn.

How do I do this? Just pry off the pad seat?

take the seat out and yes it is a bunch of clips to take the leather off.

Do I really need to take the seat out?

I think the seat pad can be separated from the seat.
Mine has a broken clip or whatever it is but I'm not sure how to remove the seat pad without breaking whatever is holding them to the seat pan.

I'm interested in this too since mine will be redone shortly.

theres also like 2 screws underneath the seat holding the pad in. you're going to have to take the seat out to get to them. its easy tho, only 4 bolts holding the seats down. make sure you disconnect the airbag and seat belt sensor wires underneath before taking the seat out. they're connected by a 3 or 4 pin connector, if you have power seats then dont forget to connect the power supply for those either. they're heavy so you may want some help so you dont hurt your back

Listen to Bimjam96: it's best to remove the seat first.

Coupla months ago I did a complete driver-passenger cushion swap (use SEARCH). While it's true the four cushion clips holding the cushion on are plastic, they're pretty robust. If you don't flip the seat and whack off the tines of the clip (and just pull on the cushion instead) you risk tear-out of the holes in the cushion base.

The cushion base might be fiberglass and not metal: too risky.

And if you take out the seat(s) you might find enough loose change to pay for new cushion clips.

I've been thinking of doing this to replace/fix my seat heaters...

Be sure disconnect the battery before you disconnect the seat, you will get an SRS light that won't go out until it's reset at the dealer or independent mechanic that has the SRS reset tool.
