Hello,

I have a 95 318i 5 speed with about 215,000 miles. It runs like a clock with only a few electrical bugs and an occasional proroblem with the transmission.

Once in about every 20 starts it will violently pop out of first gear. All other gears shift perfectly and I have not noticed any slippage in the clutch. I always make sure I am at a complete stop and the rpms are at idle before shifting into gear. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

I'm awfully confused. This is when your just driving down the road in first gear it pops out?

I've actually seen that on someone elses' car. Same year same model, same mileage as your car.
I think they diagnosed the problem as being in the transmission.

Seemed almost like the E-Brake stuck on for a second when it happened. BOOM!

happened in my friends old colt, so i know what you mean but he kinda sold it before we worked out what it was.

It is only when accelrating from a dead stop. I have to wait for the engine to return to full idle, to avoid grinding the gears, put it back into first and start again.

I have the same problem with my 95' 325i that had 129,000 when I bought it. I've learned to just jam it into first gear hard or it'll pop out. Very annoying. I'd sure like to know a permanent fix for this too.
