Hello All

So I finally did it after looking for about a year. Actually I looked at this particular car a year ago but though the price was too high then. Most of my comments are from Sept of 2007 as I cut and pasted it off my original post since its the same car and miles as last year. Just a better price.

The guts on the car:

1988 Canadain Model
Rare Silver Metalic Paint like New (Canadian color) with Black Leather Int.
52000 Original Miles (85000 KMs)
All Stock and fully serviced ($6000 in last two years spent on self leveling susp. redone, new brakes, even new OEM TRX Tires, and what ever else BM advised, all always at BMW and all within last 3000 KMS)
Never seen winter or only rain unless when caught off gaurd
3 documented owners (1st 88-90, 2nd 90-2002, 3rd 2002 till today)
All original paint and all like shiny new (always garage stored), no dings, marks, scratches, or rust anywhere - perfect original paint. Even has the original clear plastic over the corner of the rear fenders where the ends of the spoiler covers although it has yellowed a bit but since its covered when the trunk is closed I would leave it original and it wont bother me.
Even the original muffler has zero surface rust
The under side looks clean and original and almost like new
All records available including bill of sale come with the car

Everything works as it should and nothing is needed, not even an oil change or a wash. I had it checked by a reputable old school BMW shop. Just drive it or hide it. (maybe consider the timing chain soon)

This car does not have the rear seat arm-rest cooler as it is a Canadian model and it was not available as an option in Canada.

Just a few more pics.

And yes, this was the car recently on Ebay.

looking forward to finally being an active member of the BM community and especially of the "SHARK", one of the nicest body styles to ever be produced.

On the pic for the driver side interior, that is not a stain on the carpet, just the sunlight giving an odd reflection when the shot was taken.

Here is the last one I have

Also, the car has not had a detailing in years. No wax for over a year or engine bay cleaning for at least over 5 years. I will give it a very good detailing once officially in my hands.

Max, nice going! We all dream about a well cared for M6 with low miles that we pick up for cheap. However, even with the low miles (KMs) there is age to think about.
There are white plastic chain guides that keep the timming chain centered, yours are certainly dark brown and brittle with age. You'll want to have that job done fairly soon. There are lots of stories of timing chain guides shattering and destroying the engine. You might also want to join the yahoo s38/m88 members fourm. A fantastic bunch and the archives are invaluable. Are you thinking of doing any work on the car yourself? If so, drop me a line, I can save you alot of time.

Congrats ! I'm in Montreal too.
I had a close look at that particular car (in DDO, right ?) and went for a drive in it last June with a friend who was interested in buying it too. He passed and I'm not in the market for another E24 ....one's enough for me.
I'm pretty sure it's a re-spray though as we measured the paint thickness's on the body vs that in the door jambs and in the engine bay and noted a large difference. IIRC owner # 2 kept in in Florida for quite a spell and our theory was that the salt air did in the original paint and necessitated a re paint by him ....just a theory though as the guy selling it sincerely believed it was the original paint and had no idea and seemed like a good honest guy to me.
Anyway, it's a nice car although too expensive back in June and I imagine you got a better deal now so good on you. I asked the seller specifically about the timing chain guides that Chris above mentions and according to him they had never been replaced. Chris is VERY right ...you need to get on that right away.
Write me at baddog@videotron.ca or give me a call at 514 987 6293 if you want any advice or just for the hell of it and to compare cars and notes and go for a spin.
Damn few E24's left in Montreal !

Hello Taylor

No for my long boring reply and yes that is the car. Back then the asking firm price was and has been for the past year $35000.00 CAD.

I heard about your car and turbo set up from someone, don't recall who.

I have spoken with Keith in the past (last year). I had the car checked by Norbert last year where Keith referred me to, it only has 300 more miles today. He gave the car a clean bill of health then minus the Timing Chain question/option and there was a very slight leak underneath that he noticed and quoted me a couple of hundred bucks to change the seal causing it but he also said it was so minor that it was optional. He had it for the day on a lift etc....

In respect to the paint: I had my body guy check it out and I have to go back a year ago to my notes but if I recall I think I had tracked down the 2nd owner or a family member and had spoken with them (need to make sure I am not mixing up cars here but I do not think so).
The panels are all original and still have the inner factory tags. No body work was ever done, no dings or severe scratch either or repairs of any kind. The very lower part of the side panels between the door and front wheels was re-painted or re-sprayed. The entire car had a good hand wet sanding and a couple of coats of clear applied two years before the sale to the third owner and either just before coming back to Canada or while still in Florida its last year, they did not recall exactly where it was done. Other than that the paint is suppose to be original-to that extent.
My body guy did confirm to me that the insides of doors, engine, trunk etc were all original and that all panel were original without any body repair work having been done. He looked over the level of metallic specs from one panel to another and sited that silver is very hard if not near impossible to make a perfect match unless extreme attention is paid and thus believed the paint to be 90% original but for those lower (below the door) opening part. As well he had found very minor surface rust near the rear plate which would be an easy local fix not requiring much to correct. The rest was healthy although he would redo the bottom parts mentioned above to his standards once doing the rear plate area, which to me were already fine.

Anyways, very nice example and but for that 1700 mile red one that sold this summer on the east coast and that red one with 17000 miles going for $39000 on the west coast I have not seen a cleaner nicer one for sale in stock form. The mechanics are just as clean and good so I don't have much money to put into it but for the timing chain preventative measure.

Regards

Max

Hello Chris,

I am still dreaming then. It is very well cared for and low miles and while I did get a better price then last year or early this summer it was still not cheap. I figure all the other cars I looked at would end up costing me as much and easily more to get it to be as mechanically sound and cosmetically correct as I want it to be and like this one. Plus they would prob still not be silver/black which I actually liked and never be a stock original low mile example.

As for the chains, I will play the safe rout a source the required parts and have the work done. I don't think I would attempt to tackle a job like that. Minor stuff or insight that anyone may have will always be welcomed. I will look at the forum and join it. Just need to get the car in my hands first which I do not see happening before end of Oct.... Hoping to make it by Oct 19th for that BMW annual drive.

Thanks and speak to you soon.

Regards

MAx

It's all good Max and obviously you did your homework. I'm very pleased that you know Keith H. and talked to him about the car which IS a lovely example of the breed. I was pretty amazed when Keith announced looking up from his measuring gizmo that at least some of the car had been re-sprayed as I never would have thunk it from looking at the car. I'm not a purist and don't care about such things as paint jobs as long as they are well done and am much more into performance (re. going like stink) than aesthetics. Drop a line some time and we'll get together. Welcome to the club or, as we call ourselves at RF, the 'League of Idiots'.
Norbert is a blast from the past..he and his wife took my wife Marie and I out to Les Halles for one of their 9 course gourmet meals many years ago and we had a great time.
I haven't seen him since

Great looking car. Few M6's have such low mileage. Congrats on the purchase.

Hello Snipper,

Thanks. I plan on keeping it low miles over the years and will give it an extreme detailing inside, outside, and engine bay. Anything needing work, which is nothing but the missing red handle screw driver and window tool (which I already sourced off ebay) and the slight warping of the front bumper top (seen in front view picture) will get attention. I hope to have it be a true example of a perfect M6 stopped in time.

Thanks again,

Max
