i'm really starting to think that my car hates me!:mad
My steering wheel is Freaking shaking like hell when I'm around 40~50 mph,
I've replaced so far:
- control arms & bushings,
-4 tyres,
-New suspension (Bilstein),
-2 tracking done (wheel alignement).
Various wheel balance!
I have replace this afternoony my 2 front discs (rotors) and brake pads pads, OEM. replaced sensor + clips.
check bushings etc, and everything looks alright!
Don't really know what to do next?
Wheel bearings? Would the steering shake like that?
i was under the impression that Bearings should make some sort of humming noise but no shake!?

Any help would be really appreciated!

i think it may be because your steering wheel is on the wrong side

yann76
09-13-2008, 06:40 PM
Or you are the wrong side!?
You are only driving on the right side because of the French!!

Yann76, the wheels you have, are they a exact fit to the hub? i.e. e36 wheels.

yann76
09-13-2008, 07:15 PM
They seem to be the original wheels.
They are 16" style32.
i think they came with the Lux Pack, but can't be sure!! I have M steering but no Bumpers!!
I am now thinking that maybe a bushing is gone around the wish bone!??

I had look at it this afternoon and they didn't look too bad,
Was your steeing wheel shaking around that specific speed though?
Otherwise steering is good; it's only between 40/50mph that i am experiencing the SHAKE!!
Thanks for your input!

yeah mine was more like around 50 to 60 mph though, and once i hit about 80 it went away totally, did you actually go under and try to move the tie rod?? you shouldnt be able to wiggle it by hand

I have a similar thing. At around 65 the wheel will shake, but it'll come and go and varies in intensity. Once I hit about 80, or I start to accelerate, it's gone. It's only when I'm cruising, I haven't had time to diagnose it yet.

Ok, I will check that!

Does it wobble when your turning left/right?

Are you wheels nuts torqued to spec? Can you wiggle the wheel by hand when the car is lifted? If yes, it can be the tie rod end.

I really wouldn't know about the wheel nuts as for the tie rods; They seemed fine when i looked at it though, but I'll give it a shot!

No it doesn't wobble when turning or braking.
It just seems to be all the time; as soon as I hit the 35 mph it shakes!!!

my vote is for tie rods also. wheel bearings shouldn't give you a shake.

Well, i was going to start a new thread about this but decided to look around first and i found this one which is very similar problem to what i'm going through.
I knew my struts were shot when i started to feel a shake at around 30 all the way to 50 mph and even worst at braking or slowing down. So i replaced my struts over the weekend with Bilsteins hoping it'll get rid of the shaking. Well, it did some but not 100% gone. There's still some shaking so i was going to post/ask what else to look for. I did noticed some rubber parts (tie rods/bushings) cut up and grease coming out from. After reading your first post, I think i'm going to do that next and hope it fixes my shaking.

Do any of you know if any one sells a kit to replace all of these at once instead of buying individual parts.

Thanks

This as been bugging me for a while now,
I replaced my front suspension springs and struts on my mechanic advice;
seemed ok for a while, "light" wobble on the steering. But it became worst when I had my tracking and balance done a couple of weeks ago!
rteplaced my rotors and pads; I had a caliper binding though!!
Oh well,
I will replace my tie rods then, along with the bearings just to be sure!!
Hopefully! That will do the trick!
Thanks a lot every one for your input!
