Hi all. This one has got my dealership puzzled - I'd be really grateful for your assistance:

Bought a 2008 BMW 318i gasoline 5 months ago - it's now done 5000km. The engine was very quiet until it had done around 2000km, then it developed a fixed-pitch whiste audible in the cockpit, but is coming from the engine.

It always occurs between 60 and 80 km/hr, with volume peaks around 60 and 80, and it's the same whether I am in 4th, 5th, and (at 80) 6th gear.

It also sometimes occurs from 120km/hr upwards. Has anyone had this with the same or other recent engine? Can you give me any suggestions as to where I should look?

Thanks. Adin

I thought of PCV valves. They usually make a whistling sound when they are broken too.

I'm guessing since it's speed dependent and not gear that its' wind noise coming from the front somewhere. Have somebody drive next to you.

Hi, got a new 318i 2009 (built 3/2008), and having the same annoying whistle, when driving over 60 km/h, doesnīt matter the gear (auto or steptronic). It is more evident when decelerating. Comes and goes. Dealer has no idea and said this is normal. Did you finally found what it was on your car?
