Hi, I am new to this. The computer was stolen from my 1995 318ti. Dealer told me to buy a used DME and tow the car to them to program it. After buying two DME's, they said this model is equiped with EWS and, have to buy a new DME. A new one is a about $1200, and I don't have the money to buy it.
Does any body Knows a way around EWSII system? I don't care for EWS system, just want to start the car.

Which two DME's did you buy (what's the numbers and label color?) In my 94 I put a 95 engine and wiring harness in -no cut wires to disable the ews. However I'm using a 94' dme in which it has the same motronic version yet without the ews. Maybe if you can get your hands on a red label 0261203282 you should try that. Just keep in mind that there are two versions, an auto and manual. There is a three digit code on the bosch label to tell the difference

I have a 95 318is but the DME is a 95 318ti. Took it to a BMW (not dealer) mechanic and had the dme and ews synchronized, works great. Might try an independent mechanic.

Or you can do it the ghetto way, i.e. use the key to unlock the steering and tranny, but use a screw driver to turn the switch.

Oh man, now you tell me. I could have save a couple ben jam ins.

And this defeats EWS how??? EWS is an electronic immobilizer. Unless the serial # in the key transponder matches that in the ECU, the biggest screwdriver in the world won't get the car to start.
I see no reason why the dealer can't sync your key to the new ECU. They have the tools to do this; all that needs be done is the serial # in the ECU needs to be matched to the key and you're set. I think someone's trying to rip you off and get you to buy their $1,200 OEM DME.

If you have the correct DME, it can be reporgrammed to agree with the EWS. My mechanic did this for me about 6 months ago. As m2pc stated, a brand new DME is not your only solution.

Thanks guys. I think the best option is to buy a 1994 DME, since it is not equiped with ews. I orderd one for $100, from car-part.com. Waiting to get and try it. will post the result.

I don't think that will work. Or at least there is more involved than swapping the dme unit.

It should work. (as said earlier I have 95 m42 w 95 harness running a 94 red label computer.)

Sorry. I should have read your earlier post more carefully.

I am glad to report that, it works. Using a DME which is not programed with EWSII,will start the car.
