People who do so in North America usually do it as part of a program called European Delivery which is setup by BMW where you pickup your car at the factory and drop it off at any European BMW dealership and they ship it to our shores. So one doesn't deal with import regulations or anything else, it's a pretty hassle free process not very dissimilar to buying a car locally.
If you don't have such a program in Australia, then you'd have to find your own shipping company, customs broker, deal with the paper work, bureaucracy and all the hassle, and most often than not, if this is the 1st time you've done so, it will be a very unpleasant and possibly costly process. You should do your homework since import regulations and taxation differ greatly from country to country and most people here may only know about how it is in the US or Canada which is usually much more simpler than most of the rest of the world.
