Are you sure it's 72? The only 72 I see on a '95 318 is unused. Also, what gauge are you using?

Your probably grounding out the wire. Those things are useless anyways, why would you want an A/F gauge!? To look geeky in your pillar?
Standard 1 or 2 wire, narrow band A/F sensors are completely useless. They fall off accuracy at anything outside of 14:1 ratio, and also loose all accuracy at WOT, that's why the computer ignores the O2 sensor outside of light throttle (goes into open loop). Vehicle computers only use them as a hi/lo switch, and vary the A/F ratio several times a second, alternating between rich and lean. That's all they are capable of. If you want to use it for anything practical, get a 4 wire wideband o2 sensor and a gauge for that. There is an australian company that makes a kit for about a hundred bucks, otherwise they are very expensive.
