i need to bring the subframe, 4 controll arms, differential, and both trailing arms to the shop tomorrow to get bushings/ball joints pressed in

im going to try and clean what i can, time permitting. Just wish i had a set of subframe bushings to replace mine with, noticed one of them is going to hell:(. I removed all this because it was just time to refresh the bushings before i start modifying the car for autoX. Found that both of my upper ball joints were toast, diff bushings were torn, exhaust wasnt torqued properly, uuc rtabs werent torqued and causing loud noises...f
glad i got in there and can fix all this.
ok, everythings at the shop getting pressed in...just ordered new oem sub bushings...didnt want to but mine dont look good :o

Since you are in there its a good thing you are going to change them out.

i really didnt want to, and dont have the money to replace them and eat, but..i guess i can diet for a week or 2:(..
atleast i know when its all done the car will feel much better.. Torn sub bushings, torn diff mounts, dead rear ball joints, right rtab was loose..

oh well, this gives me a few days to clean things

Shop wont have the bushings pressed in till tomorrow, and my new sub bushings wont arrive till friday, so i SHOULD have it all wrapped up saturday night (work). Then alignment on monday..Oh im still waiting for my rsm's

Looks like my car did a month and a half ago, jack stands and all. I did the same thing, all new bushings and ball joints in the rear end. You will love how it feels when its completed.
shop just called me, apparently one of the holes that the new ball joints press into is either "worn" or out of spec, they said the new joint just slides right through, and they tried a few of them to see if it was just the ball joint. So now what the hell do i do..
Ive found some loctite products (640) that fill gaps for such issues, going to give it a shot
trying this tomorrow to fix the issue. new subframe bushings should be here before i get off work.

after rushing all day, working 9-6, running home to get the delivered sub bushings, and running them to the shop, and taking the girl to work...
the shop didnt have time to do them...ugh..

its honestly not bad, i did this all in my garage alone with basic tools and initiative. I would DEFINATELY suggest taking everything out and bringing it to a shop to have parts removed/pressed. The assembly and removal of the arms, diff, and frame is easy. Just to make it that sound that much easier, ive only had this car (or any bmw) since may.. Im a complete novice...
now i just need to get it finished either tomorrow night or sunday..damn work:mad
i had to try something tonight, couldnt go to a complete waste

I've got the RTAB removal tool that I used to take out the subframe bushings if you'd like to borrow it. I did the removal in my garage with basic tools alone and it only took a weekend (with the rtab tool). I'm in San Diego.

ok i found someone who could do the sub bushings right. It was 40 bucks but he drove 30 miles to his shop to do it for me, and cleaned the frame up.
I have a party to goto after work but i may just stay in to get this damn car done...

It really isn't that bad, although it was a little precarious getting the subframe and diff out. A couple of shops were definitely caught off gaurd when I brought the parts in though. One tech went crazy and left when faced with pressing out all those bushings...
I added powerflex subframe bushings and TMS solid diff bushings but everythings else was stock. It was a complete transformation. I din't realize how loose everything was back there till I replaced it.

how long should this project take if you have a lift and a press, and Tools.. well minus the RTAB tool.
i would say, if you have a game plan, to remove and separate everything (subframe, control arms, trailing arms, diff..etc)..Probably 2-3 hrs to drop it all, whatever it takes you to press the old stuff out and install the new bushings/joints.. Then probably roughly the same time to reinstall.
I started monday night, but i wasnt doing subframe bushings or diff bushings just yet, then after finding out that i couldnt get the ball joints out at home, i just ripped it all out, then waited on new sub bushings.. I only have maybe 4 hrs of work in this entire job honestly. Just have to reassemble.

dropping a rear end and then welding the subframe reinforcement plates isn't fun, all on jsckstands of course.. I am just waiting for a few parts so I can put mine all back together.

you should replace the rear bushings with the rear ball joints, all-around. they are the same size.

I replaced the front lower control arm bushings, the rear inner and outer upper and lower control arm bushings, the RTABs with UUC polyurethane, subframe bushings with powerflex purple polyurethane, diff bushings with TMS solid bushings (this definitely made acceleration more snappy with minimal noise.
I had to take the parts to a shop (actually a couple of shops) to get the bushings pressed out, bc without the right tools its a major pta. That cost me ~$400. Then I got an alignment $69. You'll have to look up the cost of the parts but its pretty easy on realoem.

Hoping to get it done tonight, last night i only had so much time. Right now the left side is done other than the Ebrake assembly.. Just right trailing arm, sway bar, exhuast, and brakes.
