Per NHRA rules, are you required to have an exhaust that exits behind the driver?

I thought it had to exit behind the rear wheels?

I believe the exhaust needs to exit outside the vehicle. And if it is under the car it should be behind the driver. That is MY preferance. Look at all the pro stocks they exit under the floor and are just in front of the driver. i have yet to see a rule on exhaust except for the blown alky cars and and faster. ///J.T.///

There are different rules covering different classes. Exhaust is pretty free, but in some classes, for example sport compact Sport RWD, the exhaust must run the length of the body and exit at the rear.

Which class are you asking about or is it just a general question?

Well, I am not familiar with NHRA classes. The car is stripped and heavily modified, including a motor swap. Might run 12s if properly driven.

For most classes as JT says the exhaust is free (you can do what you like). A street car at a street meet (not NHRA championship event) will probably be subject to noise restrictions which means you'll need mufflers. It really depends on the officials and the night. I've seen blown big blocks with open headers passed and I've seen a stock four cylinder with exhaust ending just before the diff get bounced.
