Or should I say, I am unemployed and have been test driving cars to pass the time. (It's wild, they'll let anyone do it.)
That may seem counter productive, but I am convinced my modest salaried job will come and I will be aching to buy a new-to-me car when it does.
I just moved across country to San Francisco from Virginia and had to choose only one car to bring. It was my 93 240sx track car. Track cars are loosing ventures and I couldn't afford to replace it. The 97 m3/4/5 however could possibly be replaced.
It was my favorite car and I loved it, but I thought maybe it was time to move on.
On to another more modern car. I have test driven a WRX, 3 S2000s, an M coupe, and finally today an 05 cooper S.
And what car got me the most excited?
The S, I can't believe I'm saying it.
The WRX was just a car, a nice one, but just so unexciting. It would take too much work to get it where i wanted it. This one hurt the most. I love subies.
I really do like s2000s. They undoubtedly have the best cockpit. The wheel, driver position, and shifter are perfection. But that motor is just such a tease. It is so throughly unimpressive in low rpms, around town driving. Sure, at fuel song it is strong and sings like an angel, but the wait isn't worth it. Plus i don't want to have my seats stolen.
The M coupe I assumed I would fall in love with. But I felt too damn goofy in that car. The wheel was too big, I was sitting up too high, and although the power was where you needed it, I couldn't help but be underwhelmed. It felt like my M3, this was an '00 mind you, and it handled well, but it was a lot of money to own a car you don't feel comfortable in.
And driver comfort is key to me. And the S fit. It isn't a sling back sports car type fit, but it fit. Like my old B13 Se-r fit. And there was power at all rpms and it felt quick and handled great while not ridding horribly (I have been daily driving a track car). It did everything I need my new daily driver to do. I must admit I was giddy. And 32mpg to boot? My search is over. Which leads me to my question, (i didn't buy it) why does the car's build quality remind me so much of Ikea?
Was it put together by 3 year olds? The HVAC controls felt like they would fall off. The drivers side mirror skreeked as I put it down. The parking brake lever would wiggle from side to side, the cool buttons on the steering wheel felt as though they would pop out. And the whole thing creaked in different places as I drove. It felt so plasticy, I almost didn't drive it. But I did and it was so much damn fun, I'm not sure I care.
Please tell me these cars hold up better than I think. Because I might just go and buy one.
