Hey guys I just wanted to say that I finally was able to by my new 3.64 LSD for $455 and I got a quote from my shop for installation for around $250 labor. Just wondering if these prices sound about right?

$250 labor sounds alright. It could probably be done for cheaper but it isn't an awful quote IMO

$250 for labor to install a diff? Why don't customers like you fall into my lap every day? Even at $120/hr I don't see how it could take two hours to swap a diff out if you've got a lift.

This shop has a lift and tools, right?

+1, especially in a no-rust place like CA, two hours MAX.

Nevermind, listen to them and not me. They know they're stuff

I would try to do this myself except for the fact that I have no tools at all, no floor jacks, and I can't lift the diff itself...

I haven't recieved the diff yet but I mean if anyone could help me do it myself I would really apreciate it

I'm 17, never had to take a car in to have anything done so i don't know how these thing's are priced, if they didn't fire my autoshop teacher I could probably do it myself, but like I said I have no means of doing it

Sounds exactly right from a shop. 2-3 hours labor is book time x whatever your shop charges per hour. Just because you can do it in an hour doesn't mean anything, shops have to make money.

Thanks man, all I needed to know was if the price was average

pretty much all shops have a book were it says how long repairs should take and it doesn't matter if there done in a hour they will charge what the book says. now only if Ben could rewrite this book :)

buy a jack and stands for $100, do it yourself.

$250 would buy you a lot of tools.

Tools = savings

Now THAT is a good idea.

Hey guys, just wondering what your RPM's would be at 80 in 5th gear with a 3.64?

I have the stock diff (3.46 I think) and I'm at 2,500 RPM at 70MPH in 5th. So I would imagine you would at least be over 3k RPM.

I haven't installed mine yet but I think you'd be around 3200rpms or so. With a 3.46 you're at like 3000 rpms at 80. With a 3.91 it's like 3500rpms at 80 I believe.

Don't worry about high rpms with the new diff. I assume your old one was the 3.46 open. When I switched over, there was not an overwhelming difference, so don't sweat it.

+1 for buying some tools and doing it yourself. I just recently did mine with a friend and just had the car on some jack stands. I ended up bench pressing the diff into place while he aligned the drive shaft to the diff input, that was probably one of the harder parts.

Also, I think you told me that your dad was/is Navy, so see if he can get you in to the hobby shop with a lift on base. Though I am not sure what the rules are on use of the hobby shop tools and lifts.

Good luck!

Yea I have a messed up 3.46 open, I never though of using the base as a way to get some tools, so many good ideas, why can't I think up any

Problem with that is, to do it myself I would have to spend money, then if I couldn't do it, I wouldn't be able to pay for towing and for the shop...

Do you guys think a shop would let me watch a diff job be done so I can see how it's done?

Maybe. With 1 other person manning the e-brake or gear selector I can do a diff swap at my house in less than an hour.
