How to remove valve stem from wheel?

I know shops use a specialized tool to install and remove these suckers, but I am not a shop and do not possess such a tool....

Any tips? I am tempted to just carve it out with a knife, or drill but if there is an easier way please tell lol.

I just cut the rubber piece on the inside of the wheel and then use pliers to pull it out. Works very well.
