OP, to save you time, tonyroc14s thread was about how all 4 of his tires blew out and he died. Ghost scare me:help

yes i knew. low miles, only 50k, original tires (20 years old)...
now you know why classic cars (especially race cars) only wear original tires for static display.

yeah mine scares me.
now THAT is a damn good point tony.
How many of us have nice new tires on our cars, and a 15-20 year old spare (probably leaks a pound a week, maybe only 5-6 years old if we are lucky) in the trunk.
I know mine has to be decently old... I don't think they've made Firestone Firehawk HP for several years now.

I have a 12 v compressor so I do'nt even check my spare that frequently anymore.
If I need it, i can air it up in a few minutes anyway.

Oh man, I just checked my spare. I'm guessing it's the OE tire.

LOL. You better not ever drive on that sucker on the freeway. :) ABC news will get you.
Well at least not our here in our deserts.
I can tell without the date code it is shot, just looks 'off'. yu can feel it sometimes too.
They get 'wooden' as it is so often stated, but that is about all I can describe it as.

Oh yeah, definitely. I had the spare out at the track and I could just tell it was "old". It just looks kinda...plasticy. Didn't think there was a way to figure out it's age, but there you go.
I might just get an inexpensive Kumho or something on there just for peace of mind - Now the spare is just dead weight. Not like I'm gonna use it as it is now. :freak

Oh damn, that was interesting to learn the code, and see the test.
I am curious though....I would like to see the difference between a blowout/de-tread on an SUV, like the Explorers they used, and an average sedan. Like, they only showed the test on high-center-of-gravity cars, what about all the other cars on the road?

Old news but good education for those that don't know.
My 535i had Continentals from 1996 when I bought it in 2004. Not good. Fortunately, I corner/drive my 525 HARD, so tires wear out LONG before I get to an age issue. My spare on the other hand.....I have never looked. Pretty sure no one has ever used it....and I never will.....it's not even in the car.

Any car gets twitchy and skittery when the tread separates, regardless of CoG.
most drivers today have never had a tire failure, and are completely and woefully unprepared for any class of emergency that would require two hands on the wheel.

thats why i think the drivers edge class that i took should be mandatory for reciveing your license, no matter your age.

Its not a class where you sit down and listen, its hands on, driving, and learning what the car does in a situation like that. My buddy is one of the instructors there. Piere Kleinubing, dont know if you've heard of him, but here is the team he races for: http://www.realtimerl.com/ Drivers edge is a great product, absolutley free, and it has taught me many things, that i would have never learned untill it actually happened: http://www.driversedge.com/
take a look.
