View Full Version : Chick Car?

I was telling a guy at the office that I was getting rid of both my Z3 and my 325 Xi. He asked what I was getting. I told him I was considering a Mini Cooper. He about fell out of his seat laughing and called it a "Chick car." This totally shocked me because I see the Mini as a sporty, fun to drive, agile car; a real driver's car. Not that his reaction really bothers me since most people that label a car a "Chick car" usually can't drive worth a crap, but I was wondering if anybody else gets this kind of reaction?

I do hear people say that about the MINI, but then some people say it about the Z3 roadster too :rolleyes. I personally agree with you and I see plenty of men driving MINI's.

Take him for a scary ride in your "chick car". See if that doesn't resolve the issue.

I encourage anyone who thinks it's a girl's car to take a ride in one with Randy Webb (of Webb Motorsports). I've been a passenger at 160+ in a C6.Z06, have been in a track-prepped Viper GTS ACR, et al, and I have *never* been more terrified in a vehicle than after Randy put my Milltek on at one of his 'pulley parties' a few years ago.

The fastest I've ever driven one (a gen 1 non-S) is around 90mph and didn't notice any.

Torque steer isn't going to be apparent at highway speeds; it's going to be apparent in turns taken at a brisk pace, where you're throttling towards track out, particularly right turns in the R56. My R53 didn't have much, but the wife's '08 is pretty pronounced. Are 90% of drivers going to notice? Nah, and even for the other 10%, you've got to be in the right set of conditions to induce it, but it is definitely there.

MrBlah
08-04-2008, 09:50 AM
I notice it at straightline stoplights, if there's any imperfection in the road, the torque steer is going to pull you all over

and right turns are noticeably worse than left turns

above 2nd gear I've never felt torque steer, I only feel it in 1st/2nd gear under WOT conditions

As far as stereotypes go... it is a chick car... doesnt mean a guy cant get one... but it isnt the same as a lifted pickup or a "sporty" sports car

it would probably be less of a chicks car if it wasnt a "mini" cooper

I have to disagree, it's really never considered a "chick car" in fact, it's a cult classic, a vw bug may be a chick car, but not the mini and it's stubby bulldog look

now if it came with a 80hp motor and that's it, ie all looks and no performance, I would reconsider, pretty much every magazine classifies thinks like vw's and miata's as chick cars

PT Cruiser? Chick car.
Miata? Chick car.
Thunderbird? Chick car.

But not the Mini, unless you could turn back 50 years of time and undo all that mini history

if you were to make a list of all the chick cars, it would be really long, and a TON of cars/suv/vans before you ever got to a mini cooper

tenfifteen
08-04-2008, 02:06 PM
Miata? Chick car.
Could not disagree more... the Miata is a classic driver's car. RWD, great balance, and a perfect fit for spec races, where it is represented in several series. A lot of girls may buy them, but it's a true sports car.

Btw, 2/3 of MINI sales are to women, last I read. I don't think that means anything, just saying.

I've never gotten "it's a chick car" but I get a lot of "that's a cute car " from alot of chicks (lol) I was also informed right after I got it that it was a very popular car with the gay set, so go figure. Personally I like mine alot and like others said, if you're heman buddies think it's a "gaycar" or a "chicks car" take them on a ride,US129 works really well to remedy their opinions, lol

Ridiculous. Its amazing how many good cars get the rap for being "chick" cars. And they all seem to be damn good cars. Volkswagons, Minis, Audi Roadsters, Z3s and Z4s, Porsche's Boxster and Cayman, etc... I've even heard it said about my 328i coupe. The fact is that the Mini is a great car. The guys who say those things have sexual issues that require a phallic symbol as a vehicle.

Nah... they're just not very bright. That would mean that chicks like small, nimble cars that handle... and the brainiacs don't. Then again maybe it is about compensating.

I've yet to have anyone tell me my MCS, Z3 Coupe or Miata are chick cars. I wonder why?

This is a common reaction, imo. At track days people will look at my car and say stuff like "oh man, my wife/sister/female cousin/mistress/whatever should get one of these!" People don't make a conscious effort to feminize the car, so it doesn't bother me at all.

When people call it a "chick car," most owners get defensive and say "chicks actually dig it and comment and blah blah blah." It's an awesome car for many reasons; if people perceive it in a gendered way and place a negative connotation on that, then they are fairly lacking and should probably not be listened to.

lol @ people with minis calling miatas chick cars. First off I don't really believe in chick cars, they are just uniformed people calling small, light, driver oriented cars, chick cars. But when some one with a "chick car" call another car a chick car that's just rediculous. Look, drive what you like. Rest well knowing you bought your car for the drive, not to be a hard parker.

the mini is a big time hairdressers car! i used to own an electric blue one and all my guy friends would tease me about how ghey it was lol even though its a driver's car, they said I should buy a 'tougher' or 'cooler' looking ride haha

Well, by definition a "chick car" is a car that women love.... so, everywhere you go, women stare jealously at your car and ask you questions about it. I'm not seeing the negative here, but maybe I'm missing something?

+ I have to reiterate what previous posters said... have him ride in, or better yet, drive one. That should fix the problem. :)

Exactly, and what kind of people are those who base their decisions on thoughtless opinions of idiots?

One way to demonstrate that Mini is not a chick car is that adding on Schnitzer parts (warranty remains at least in Europe) it can be even faster than an E46 M3 and E60 M5 on the Nürburgring! Do that in a chick car!

I don't drive a MINI but am looking into getting a Cooper S. So...I was talking to a kid at school and told him my interest in the MINI, and he says to me, "that's a really girly car, I would never get one," and I asked him what he drives and he said a Mazda 3. Not even the speed 3...so I think we can close the books on this discussion, because the Mazda 3 SEDAN is one of the lamest cars and certainly the MINI blows it away. :redspot

Great post, great pic  ...but not really a fair comparison as Mustangs are easily outdone. I've taken them in the twisties in my Hyundai - they can be fast, sure, but they don't handle worth sh*t and most Mustang drivers can't drive.

honestly minis are a sick car, i would actually considering on buying one. its probably the only compact car i would ever considering on buying unless i got some other small car dirt cheap and it was only for temporary. sure i see a lot of chicks driving them, but i wouldn't classify them as a girly car.

My two cents...

- Drive what you like and ignore what other people think. Anyone's comment about your car is more a statement about his or her personality than it is about your car.

- Mini's are a blast to drive. There aren't many cars out there that can match the fun factor.

- My son claims that Mini drivers are happier than the general population. He may be right!
