View Full Version : Best Compliment You Ever Got For Your E36!?

Mines was definately today; I was getting some wires for my 18 button OBC conversion at the Radioshack near me on Central Ave in Scarsdale when the guy who just sold me the wires comes outside for a smoke break and see me get into my car.
We get to talking about BMWs because he wants to buy one and when I tell him "Yeah, I bought my car in 2004," His honest to God serious reply was;
"Wow, it still looks new for a 2004 model!"
I just nodded cooly and said "yeah I try to take good care of it" and quickly left the scene.
I mean who could blame him... :D

I think the best compliment I have gotten was an offer in the Target parking lot to buy my car. A guy came up and said he had been looking for a BMW convertible, and said he saw me driving across the parking lot. He came from about 3 parking lanes over to ask me if I wanted to sell it. He kept complimenting the car over and over. We talked for a bit, then when he walked away he kept looking back at it.

I dropped my mom off to do something while her car was down, once. While I was sitting outside waiting a 40-ish year old lady came out and looked the car up and down. According to my mom, when she went back inside she said, "you guys will never believe this, the nicest BMW I've ever seen is in our parking lot!" I guess it's a good thing I'd just washed it that day. :D
But then, I've had all the same compliments on my drum set.

Mu co-workers always slag me off calling me "drug dealers" and similar "compliments", because only drug dealers can afford to buy and mod a car like this :D Most compliments are for my shiny wheels and exhaust, oh, and 2.4kW sound system...:devillook
I was asked to sell it couple of times on the traffic lights:D
Once a couple asked me what kind of BMW that was, couldn't believe it was '94 3 series :)

My friends unanimously agree my car's the fastest in the canyons (far away from other people), even though my car sways like a boat (worn shocks) and everything except for the optional rims and sticky tires is stock, and my friends aren't exactly bad drivers. Also, being told my car looks newer than most E46's is great too! :D Just like most people, no one can believe my car is 11 years old.

I've got a somewhat funny comment if you think about it. When my car was stock with the 16" rims and M3 bodykit from the 99' M sport package, a bmw salesman a couple years ago was looking at my car from the rear and said "Nice M3". He was looking right at the 328is badge on the trunk. I responded, "You know that it's a 328is right?"

hahaha. i used to get the same thing. my girlfriends boss, and coworkers all thought i was a dealer.
recently, after all my latest work, i've had 2 offers to buy it.
but i think the best compliment was, someone tried to steal it. that's flattering... i think.

My mother in law thought it was only 2 years old based on the condition.
My wife's grandfather couldn't believe I bought what must be a $40,000 car. His eyes just about bugged out of his head when I told him it was $8000.

My sister and I were stopped a light one day, and two kids that appeared roughly my age at the time (maybe 6 or 7 years ago), and the driver of the car said.... "I hate you", then he continued to tell me how nice my car was and asked how much it was lowered, at that point it was all o.e. Not the best compliment, but funny non the less.

Because I'm only 16, I rarely get any GOOD compliments. I typically just get that "did mommy and daddy buy that for you?" look from people. I've never really gotten any compliments in person that stood out against all others, although, I have gotten a few good compliments from some members on here.

mine was sort of a backhanded compliment. Happened yesterday when I stopped to help a guy with a broken down Merkur.
guy in an extremely riced out eclipse pulled up. Ugly body kit, ugly paint (least it was painted), lambo doors, and a melon shooter exhaust.. when he realized my car was a Bimmer he was amazed.. he had never seen a Ti before and had just assumed I was driving a "Honda civic or something"

Went to the basketball courts last summer and this was after i just washed and waxed her. I had installed my Depos with the HID and my DS1's too. I had spend the whole day cleaning it and making it look as nice as I could for a 97. I drove up to the court and got out and a bunch of the guys that I play with started to look at it and asked me how much I got it for. They thought it was a newer car rather then a 11 year old car. It just goes to show if you can take car of your car and actually put effort in to taking care of it, it can be as nice as having a brand new car.

i work with two guys with e46's one modded and one stock... none of my coworkers can believe that mines 11 years old but they like the way mine looks better than theirs. a few have said it looks more aggressive. but when i tell them my e36 will spank both those newer models + the mileage i gave. then when they go tease the e46 drivers, i just smile and laugh.

I was like, "WTF mate, they aren't that expensive, just buy one if it makes you that butt-hurt."

Honestly that's not as uncommon as you'd think. They say they don't profile, but your not the first person I know who's had this happen. Heck, one of my coworkers get's searched every time he gets pulled over (looks like a Hippy and drives an '03 GTO).
The best compliment I ever got was, "You must have got a lemon man, you are always working on that thing."
I get that and, "You bought the Harley Davidson of cars" a lot. Thing is, I keep hearing it from people who actually break down! The 323 hasn't broken down yet. <knock on wood>

hah! I just thought of another one.
when I wrecked my first E36 the cop that was taking down the report was asking me questions and stuff and I guess he just had to throw this in at the end, "you're driving a BMW at 18," (years old) he turns and starts walking away "must be nice..."
I felt like shit for wrecking my car, and that comment kinda made me mad at the time but looking back at it it's kinda funny.
I was driving a 94 318i, I bought it at 12 years old with 210,000 miles on it for 3 grand....

I don't know what it is about BMW's, but people just think you have money when you drive them no matter what the year. I have a 99 and people are all the time like, "What do you do? Can I get a job?" I'm pushing a ten year old car! I'm not stepping out of a 2009 7 series.

Well from my last post, I was not pulled over. (once again 9500i FTW) My other quote I did not actually hear:
At the July Audi Event at Mid-Ohio sports car course, I was heading out of the final turn called the carousel into the front straight right on a S4's rear end. I had my running lights on which activate the angel eyes. My buddy of using his Nikon D50 on an observation deck when some boy says to his dad "Dad, Dad, look those are the MEAN headlights I was telling you about, man that car looks amazing!" My buddy tells the boy that he had just helped install the unit on the car and the boy was asking him questions about the car the whole rest of the time I was on the track. I'll post the pictures whenever I get them. ;)

May not be the best compliment ever, but far and away my favorite comment about the car comes repeatedly from my 4 year old grandson. I've told him on many occasions that I plan on giving him my car when, in his words, he gets his "license drivers."
He and I go for drives quite often. I obviously don't do anything stupid with him in the car, but last night was a beautiful evening and I came upon an S curve. Since I recently replaced the entire suspension, I took the curve with a little more zest than usual ... all the while my grandson is yelling "whoopie!!!!"
And as we hit the straightaway out of the S curve, he looked up at me and said ...
"Paw Paw, my car is SMOKIN'!!!"

and of course I am driving my bmw shown in the sig. Sitting along main street in the small town of sumner iowa were a group of female teeny boppers. Me and my buddie stop at the stop sign next to them and they look at his car and then they look at mine and yell at me nice car, your car is hot, insert typical teenage comment here ect. I just kind of smile and said thank you yada yada yada. I say to them "What do you think of the car ahead of me"? They respond with "UMMMMM Itsss nice" I told them thanks once again and drove off. I fing busted a gut. I still havent had the heart to tell my buddie that his car totaly got blown off.

first 2 hours i bought it (out of town), went back to our campsite and a lady driving around stopped and said "Wow, is that one of the new models?" - "Nope, its actually a 98" - "OMG! Thats a beautiful car"
I get the "drug dealer" and "money bags" compliment all the time, which to my response is "this is the lowest of the low BMW ever made... the bank owns the car, and Visa owns everything else on it ;)"
"It looks like a roadster" ---- yeah i guess hah
Stopped a stoplight right after I got my wheels back on, some old guy rolls down his windows and said "wow those wheels look great, did you polish lips"
Got gas in the city yesterday and the girl behind the counter said "Wow, nice wheels, they look like they barely fit in there, does it hit?" - "Very much so" I replied, and handed over $75 for my fill-up :(
I live in a place without alot of BMW's.. especially modded ones and especially Ti's of any sort... so I get compliments pretty regularly.
I think it even helped me get my last job, as on the way into the conference building, the dude stopped and started eyeing up my car wondering who owns it. It was a good ice-breaker... and i got the job :)

Subject: Old Man
It was a blistering hot day, the outside temp sensor read 94 and it felt like 105. I had just put the top up for fear of parking lot hoodlums, rolled the windows up, and stepped away from the car. She had a nice shine from the wash I'd given her not an hour ago and looked like a million dollars. An elderly gentleman who looked to be pushing his late sixties walks up to me and proceeds to ask me what I hit with my new BMW. I give the man a look and say, "I don't know what you're talking about old man." He points to my driver's side rocker panel and points out the small dent and scrape there from the previous owner. I look back at him and say," Oh, that. It was on the car when I got it, and it's not new, she's pushing 12 years old." He looks at me square in the eyes, says, "Nice car.", and walks away. I stare after him for a few seconds and then turn back to walking into Satan's Playground. I never saw that old man again, although I have a feeling he still walks through the parking lot every now and then looking for that beautiful BMW convertible.
Edit: Think Dick Tracy or In the Heat of the Night when reading this, makes it much funnier.

"You got yourself a deal!"
As for my best compliment... nothing really special but the tone of some peoples voices, ESPECIALLY girls when hearing that you have a BMW is amazing. "You have a BMW? Really???" It's such an attention grabber. I used to have a Maxima which was a great car and when I told people I had a Maxima they turned around and walked away. Amazing what a badge can do.

This one made me laugh.
I was coming out from the ice skating ring to grab my jacket and this guy looking around his low 20's and his buddies were staring at me as i opened my car. One of them said:
Guy: Whoa! thats your car? How old are you again?
Me: 18
Guy: Jeez! :eyecrazy this 18 year old is driving his bmw.
Guy's Friend: His parent's are rich thats why.
Me: Nah.. I payed every penny
Guy's friend: Must have a very high paying job
Guy's Friend #2: His lying
Guy's Friend: Or that.
Guy: Yea bro, you must have a really nice job or your lying.
Me: I grabbed my jacket and laughed on my way back in. Its funny I could still hear them talking about it when i closed the door. :)

It can get a bit tiresome though when people find out you have a bimmer. They want rides, or wanna drive it, hell, I had my sister call me to see if she could borrow it for a date! Also, and most vert owners know what I'm talking about, I have started imposing penalties for anyone I see climbing into the car without opening the door. I am now owed a ton of blowjobs and two dinners...and that's just between two girls!

kind of a compliment...
i was at a red light when a 3kgt vr4 pulled up next to me and was all "revvy" and whatnot. i don't like to race, i'm a safe driver (p***y driver). i don't have a problem with other people racing, just not my thing. plus, a vr4? i wouldn't even mess with that if i did like racing. anyway, the light turns green and they take off like mad, i just take off normally. they stop at the next light, i stop next to them again, and the guy rolls down his window and starts begging me to "run him". then his friend is like "dude, it's a bmw, you don't have a chance" and he says "i know, i just want to say i raced one"
i hope to god they were just messing with me, because if not, they're retarded. it's funny when people think bmw's are magic or something. but again, for the sake of mankind, i hope they were just making fun of me.

Best compliment I've ever had was today. From the tow truck driver :(.
He opened the door and goes, "wow, man, this thing's clean - how long have you had it?"
Me: "two weeks"
Him: "oh you got a nice deal" as he lifts the car onto the flatbed. :shifty

There are three times when a compliment about my car actually meant anythin to me:
1. When I took it for a PPI, I stopped back in to meet with the service tech (I took it to Moterwerks in Minneapolis) sat me down and the first thing he said was "that's a very nice car, and it's in great shape."
2. When I visited my parents a few months after buying it. My parents have owned a number of BMW's, including a current model flagship. My dad knows cars, and he knows BMWs. I took him for a ride in some particularly tight turns around their house-- it's an M, so I hit these turns really, really hard. When we came to the next stop, he turned to me and said "that was impressive." Perfect complimnet.
3. A neighbor of mine (own a franchise of swim schools and is also an avid car enthusiast) gave me advice when I was shopping for a car. He told me to get the nicest 10-year-old car I could find. I didn't have that especially in mind when I was shopping, but when i got my car, he came over for an inspection and test drive. He was laughing the whole time; he just loved the fact that I had the car he dreamed about 10 years ago. That laughter was an beautiful, inspiring compliment.
What good is a compliment if you don't respect the source? My favorite compliments came from people who wre experienced, competent, and had my respect.

Friend: "Dude, your car is soo nice. Dude, your car is soooo... nice! Dude! Your car is soooo nice!"
Me: "Uh, yeah. Thanks!"
Friend: "What exhaust do you have?"
Me: "stock"
Friend: "Omg what?! It sounds sooooo sick! Can I drive it?"
Me: ":shifty"
The other time was when my mom texted me while I was on a film shoot in Minnesota asking if she could take my bimmer because she was going to a red carpet event (she has a perfectly good, and MUCH newer vdub). lol.
i dont like compliments as much as how people turn around and look when you drive by

[QUOTE=delmarco;13669891]Mines was definately today; I was getting some wires for my 18 button OBC conversion at the Radioshack near me on Central Ave in Scarsdale when the guy who just sold me the wires comes outside for a smoke break and see me get into my car.
We get to talking about BMWs because he wants to buy one and when I tell him "Yeah, I bought my car in 2004," His honest to God serious reply was;
"Wow, it still looks new for a 2004 model!"
I just nodded cooly and said "yeah I try to take good care of it" and quickly left the scene.
I mean who could blame him... :D
:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol Great!
Mine was actually a couple of days ago...sorta. This punk comes riding up in his riced out Integra, and asked me if I liked "rollin in my daddy's slab". What? So I just turned my head and smiled at him. Of course when the light turned green, he had to show everyone whose car was the loudest...But hey, I take that as a pretty KA compliment!

I bought my e36 from my best friend. He had bought it really didn't take great care of it and sold it to me super cheep with a blown head gasket. I was there about 8 months later and his Mom complimented me on how much nicer the car looked. Felt good to know I had made progress on a vehicle.

Waiting at a light to get on the 101 @ highland this evening and a E92 rolls up next to me. Driver gives my car a once over, nods, and proceeds to "race" me onto the freeway. I launched first, giving me about an 8" lead on him before his car totally destroyed my little four banger. lol.
My point: He assumed I'd be a worthy opponent. ;)

"So how much did you pay for this, like 80 grand?"
:rofl. I've gotten some outrageous comments about it.
"How much drugs did you sell to get this?"
"It's like hot sex on wheels"
"You have too much money" - :rofl
"Spoiled rich kid"
Not sure if the last two are complements, but they make me laugh all the same as I drive away in my cheap BMW.

i get the "did mommy and daddy pay for this" all the time as im still in high school, i respond with "no, i paid every penny for it" or the "wow you drive a BMW". since i got my wheels i get compliments on them all the time especially when i just washed it. and im pretty sure the second time i got pulled over in my car the cop thought for sure i had stolen it because he asked me multiple times "whos car is this" and after he came back to my window he asked how much i payed for it and the fact that im 17 and driving a bimmer
the best compliment i have recieved was from a g35 coupe owner after i slightly pulled on him asking "is your M3 supercharged?"
that, or the gas station worker "nice 318"
please tell me you were driving your 03 M3 when you got this, if not that guy had no idea on how to drive a car. because ive been in (not driving) a G37 and gotten beat by an e46 m3

Stoplight lastnight, an older guy rolled up in a newer Chevy truck. He says, "Nice, wish I could afford something like that." I just nodded. I only paid 3250 a few weeks ago for it...it's got different headlights, corners, and blacked out grills now...

Of course, the car is tens of thousands of miles away from when it was last under warranty.

Also, some random guy said, "Nice car," today. Right as I was checking to make sure the hood hadn't come unlatched on the freeway.

well, i get the standard, "wow it's clean!" "is that new?" "only 19,693 miles on it?" <-- i get that a lot from people sitting in the passenger's seat. apparently they can't read the odometer correctly, since it now says 196,934. too big of a number for them to comprehend, i guess.
the best compliment EVER was from some bloke in a parking lot. my alternator was in its last few thousand miles of living, and my accessory belt was getting old, so you'd hear this whining sound coming from the engine bay at idle. well, that guy said, "is it supercharged? sounds awesome!" i chuckled and went "naw...."
