Me and my dad have been discussing for about a week now what kind of tires he should go with on his 05 C6. The car was tuned and worked on at Lingenfelter so it has more HP than stock, about 500 to the rear wheels. I havnt gotten a chance to go against a Z06 in it but I imagine it would be pretty close. Anyways, I know there are a few Vette owners lurking in here, what tires do you run or recommend. He wants to go with the Michelin PS2 again but I want him to go with maybe the Potenza RE01R. He was looking at BFG G-Force tires as well. Someone point me in the right direction please!

Try the G-Force R1. They don't last long, but great tires.

BFG G force (k/a dw2 I believe) are very noisy.....if you had PS2's before I dont think you would like them.
How often does he drive his car?

PS2's or Pilot Sport Cups.

The Bridgestone Potenza RE-01A that he's considering is already the best of the DOT tires. If you don't want the best, the Michelin PS2 is almost as good, but do not match up to them. The BF Goodrich KD, Yokohama Advan Neova AD07, and other top dry tires are a bit below those. Way below those are the Goodyear F1 GS-D3, BF Goodrich KDW, and other near all-season tires are below those.

he drives the car everyday. He loves the PS2s but wants to see what else is out there

I'd stick with PS2's, they're great tires. There's a reason so many companies use them as their OEM tires.

PS2 is a great tire if you have to go in the wet.
If its going to be only in the dry the Pilot Sport Cups are great.
iirc the new GTR is using the Bridgestone RE070A they are just like the Pilot Sport Cups. Not sure if they sell those right now seems like they are exclusively made for the GTR.

Personally I'd stick with the Michelin PS2's. As the previous poster suggested, the Sport Cups are awesome, but dont last long and are not good in the wet.

The GSD3 Runflats are a bad choice. Noisy and heavy.

BFG KD.

Not so great in the wet, but very good in the dry.

I run falken azenis rt615's all around on every one of my cars
they ALMOST get full traction even on my car, and I can throw the car through every turn like the good lord intended, which is tougher to do on softer walled tires and babies ass smooth bfg's and ETs when its drizzling on your way back from the track.

I have to say something here, the Potenza is NOT the best of the DOT tires, in fact a Kumho V710 is a DOT legal tire, but as an R-compound, that is not something most people drive around on the street on due to very abbreviated life.

The RE-01R is a great tire (I have them), but, and this has been discussed before, numerous tests show the RE-01R does not respond to heat well, run narrow for their size, and lack the response of the AD07 Yok or the Dunlop Z1 Star Spec. Those are the top three what most would consider STREET tires though, with the 'stone being third.

Op, what is his intent with the car? DD, Track Days, weekend car, autocross? This will dictate a lot, like what is most important to him--peak grip, compliance, noise, etc. You can go with everything with 1st tier R compound (V710, Hoosier r/A6) to 2nd tier (Toyo Ra1s, Nt01s) to extreme summer performance tires (around 140-200 treadware:rolleyes) like the aforementioned three. Tell us what the car will be doing.

I was talking about DOT, not DOT-R. I absolutely agree that DOT-R tires will give you way more grip in the dry or wet (though not deep standing and/or running water).

The Advan Neova AD07 has sharper steering response than the RE-01R (and has better feedback). However, it doesn't have predictibility at the limit because of its more abrupt breakaway characteristics nor consistancy through its life. Both good tires though.

For what it's worth, here are some direct comparisons of those tires on an E90:

I read those tests when they came out, and I think they are a good point of reference without doubt, but note that the Dunlop tested is not the new Star Spec which people are raving about; for their performance and for their great price.

I own the RE-01R, and FWIW, I would never, ever, call it's behavior predicatable at the limit, it has what many people have called a flop and set tendency that is downright alarming at times, search for people having this issue. That being said, it is better than most everything else save the AD07 and the Dunlop from the research I and others have done. Caveat, I have not driven on the AD07, but I know many people that have and they liked it a lot more than the Potenza, the TR test is the outlier from my experience.

The Re-01R gets better reviews in smaller sizes, which might explain the results of the TR test. Guys who race Miatas and Civics in STS love them and don't complain like the people running the larger sizes.

Except for it's price I have heard nothing but fantastic things about the AD07 and especially the new Z1 Star Spec. The Dunlop will be my next tire for a good road tire/autocross/track tire with a reasonable price tag.
My apologies about the DOT versus DOT-R, you said the "best of the DOT tires" I just wanted to be clear by refering to the Extreme Summer Perf. tires and to let the OP know that many don't feel the Potenza IS the best.:)
We still need to know the purpose of the car to really point the OP in the right direction.

Agreed!

I think things also really depend on your suspension tuning. The stiffer your suspension, the softer your sidewalls can be, most of the time.

I think I'm going to grab a set of NT-01 next, as soon as I can get some new wheels. I'm on Pilot Sport CUP now, and Corsa Motorsport (not System) before that. BF Goodrich R1 don't come in my size for the rear, but other Noble owners seem to love them on the track. :(
