alright screw spending 150$ for a custom CAI when i just made one for $6. i followed the DIY heat shield forum but also kinda did my own thing as well. the only money i spent was on the ceramic heat paint. the rest of the stuff i had lying around the house. the sheet metal was from an old dishwasher and the weather stripping was left over from an old roof project. lucky me i guess. heres what i did...

as the paint dried i smoked my corner lights a shade darker

im pretty satisfied for a diy with parts i found around the house. i havent tested it yet to see how much heat it actually blocks but at least it looks cool. took about 2 hours total and im going to put a K&n filter on as soon as it comes in the mail. what do you guys think?

How much welding did you have to do? I plan on making my own but I don't know anyone who welds....

looks good. i'm gonna make myself one too pretty soon (i hope). i will be heat proofing it with windshield sun screen. right now i have a temporary heat shield made of aluminum, which ain't doing much for keeping heat away from filter and tubing...

i didnt do any welding. its just bent into place and i used that weather stripping for holding and edge together if needed but yea. no welding. sheet metal is to thin anyway. it'd burn right through
theres a write up on the DIY link on how to do this, but here it is so you dont have to look. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=465625
the windshield heatshield material is a good idea. im hoping the paint i used will work enough but if not ill use a similar material for mine or just extend my intake tube down behind my bumper and hope that works. it rains a lot where im from so im not sure its the best of ideas.

German engineering at it's finest! If you have time to do a write up, I'm sure we could all benefit from it, one of the nicests DIY's I've seen.

as for the filter i just bought one at the auto store and it came with the elbow peice that i used to attach it to the MAF. i spray painted the elbow with the same heat paint inside and out and hopefully that helps too. before i did anything i couldnt even rest my hand on the air filter tube after a long drive cuz it was too hot. but good luck. the only difficult part was matching the roll of the fender and cutting out the hole for the MAF. i just trimmed a little bit at a time until it fit how i wanted. i dont think this will give me much horsepower gain but it will make me feel better that im not dumping hot air into the engine anymore. tomorrow i start the fan delete mod and im nervous cuz its supposed to be pretty warm out.

Okay....I'm planning on using some aluminum sheet metal from Lowes. How much did it take? A 2'x2' piece is like $20. I've already got my filter, it was cheap. $15........ebay :rolleyes. It's a [relatively] nice filter, so I'm not complaining.

It's easy to do, but it takes some time with a side of patients. Looks fudge'n sweet man! Ups to you.
I had the same fog lights on my 318is. They look good in person for sure. You going to do your head lights a shade darker also?
