So I searched around (here and in the engine forum) but couldn't find anything regarding a round MAF for the M42. I want do an intake on mine but don't really feel like spending 150bucks for an intake from North American Motorsports. Anyone know where I could just get the round MAF??

They're expensive. Just go to your local salvage yards to find one the right one. If not...search around online for a used one. You could go to a local BMW repair shop and see what they can find? $150 for mine. Other than that you could just buy a new one.

iirc, the M42 uses a AFM - not a MAF sensor.
and they do the same general thing... stop being cheap and get an intake if you want one... a good used MAF will run you $40-$100 if you shop around and if you have an AFM, the MAF is useless anyways....
and if you go cheap, you get cheap... why not just slap a cone filter on the end of the AFM... it'll do the same thing as buying a shitty little intake - and thats soak up the heat.
PS. love that asian cutie... although shes not quite as hot as Reon Kadena ;) lol

unless you've got or planning to have a highly modified engine, dont waste your money on an intake.. get a K&n filter, good enough!

That is a MAF sensor... and FWIW, its actually a MAF from a 6cyl because even M44 uses a different style plug in.
and it would help if you were searching for a 1995, not a 1997... but thats beside the point.
The intake will still connect to your AFM, you do not need a MAF to make it work.
Keep what you got and drop in a K&N like the guy above me said... or buy a "proper" one...
the BMP one is just a cone filter with a useless (although pretty) heatshield. (EDIT: just realized it does not even come with that shitty little sheid... lmao - $150 for a cone filter, a coupler, a "support" thinger and a few clamps is ridiculous.)
Cosmoracing.com is a good place for cheap, decent intake setups.
:rolleyes

Yea, prolly won't be doing highly modified for quite some time.... Honestly, I just like the look better than an ugly black box. I already have a K&N filter, it came with the car when I bought it and I've also de-baffled the air box.

318...Didn't even notice that. Just YO and MAF.
DIY for the CAI. Spend money on better things like an s50 swap.

meh, its late and wanted a title that would get noticed:rolleyes. I'd much rather DIY when doing a CAI, thats why I was asking about the "round MAF". I figured if it was cheap then I'd be saving cash to use for something else like Suspension:buttrock

there is no such thing as a "round MAF" ... its just a MAF sensor = Mass Air Flow
It reads the air temperature and flow and sends it to the DME/ECU which translates to your A/F ratio.
Your AFM (=Air Flow Meter) does the same thing... trust me, they are just sensors that happened to be housing in big plastic tubes, probably to avoid certain destruction from idiots. Gardenbeasts photos show an AFM... which is what you have.
You can't just "change" them out... it does not affect performance, just different ways of measuring the incoming air.
Just slap a damn conefilter on the end of it and call it a night.
(sorry, im cranky, its late and im hot.. and im fat)

I understand what an air flow sensor is. I've been around cars before, and I am not a newbie to intakes. I was using the term "round" to describe how the air flow sensor looks in the picture.
