Hey I'm wondering about a clutch issue i am having with my 540/6. The gear does not engage at low RPMs but when you rev it up, it seems to catch. I am 90% sure the clutch is gone, but i wanted to make sure. What else could it possibly be.
The clutch/flywheel were last changed 60 000 miles ago (3 years). Is it true that i'll have to replace the flywheel again? On what does this depend? This is a very expensive part, so I'd like to avoid replacing it.
If it turns out I do need to replace the flywheel, where is the best place to get a stage two clutch and lightweight flywheel? Any advice is appreciated.

jb racing or UUC for the flywheel. I have the JBR unit and have been very happy with it.

What clutch are you running? Stock or?

i'm running a stock clutch. I'll probably upgrade next time around.

i haven't really researched it yet... i thought UUC had a direct fit clutch upgrade but I'm not finding it on their site.

UUC's upgrade is a Fidanza LWFW/850csi 380mm clutch.I am keeping my OEM dual mass(absorbs vibrations) and going with a Clutchmasters FX200 265mm clutch kit.Bimmwerworld sells a JBRacing LWFW/850csi clutch combo. You are looing at $2k+ for either combo kit.I do have the JBRacing flywheel on my 535i and love it.

clutchmasters set up looks pretty nice... I'll be interested to see what condition my jbr flywheel is in once I eventually have to toss a new clutch in. Think I've got about 30k miles on my current set up. Hopefully good for another 20k.

what's the likelihood that the flywheel has to be replaced after only 60k?

Not sure... all I know is my car is on its 3rd clutch and 3rd flywheel at 120k miles. the last clutch change at 90k miles the flywheel could have been resurfaced iirc. These things chew clutches up like it's nobody's business.

do the aftermarket clutches last longer then OEM? Can the dual mass flywheel be resurfaced?

Not sure about aftermarket clutches lasting longer... in my experience the oem clutches don't last particularly well. I think the DM FW can be resurfaced if they are damaged too badly but I am not sure on that as I have never attempted to have one resurfaced.

I will be finding out next week.Actually the E34 540i clutch is very good at 265mm.The E39's are 240mm:eek:.I need a beefier cluch for my S/C set-up.If the stock flywheel FX200 combo fails, then it is on to the 850csi clutch with LWFW.

As far as the durability of the 540i/6 flywheel goes, I was told by my mechanic that they don't last very long once the clutch really starts to slip. He said as little as 20 miles, and they can be toasted beyond the ability to resurface them. However, if you catch it early enough, you will likely be able to resurface the flywheel, and save yourself that money.

I will find out next Monday as I have put 200 miles on my car since it started to slip.

Can the dual mass flywheel be resurfaced?
It can be but good luck finding a shop that's willing to do it. Apparently it's a real PITA, as there is an inherent 10 degrees of slop in the FW making resurfacing difficult.
It's more or less regarded as a one-time use part. I'm using the dualmass from a 121k 525i but it looked good.
