Hello Im new here and was wondering if i could get some help. I have a 325is 1993 w/vanos and drives great except when i want to stomp on the gas. When the car excellerates it cuts out at 3500 to 4000 rpm, and wont rev past. Ive talk to some friends and have differing opinions. Some think its the coils, others the tps, or vanos. Any help would be great.

no. it sounds normal. and drives well. its only when i punch it when it reaches 3500 it loses all power and bairly accelerates. I have to let off the gas and let it decellerate.

Hmm... fuel delivery maybe? Odd that it's not throwing a CEL, does the CEL light up when you first start the car?

yes. The cel comes on. Maybe a clogged fuel filter?

could be a lot of things... start by getting the code(s) it's throwing and go from there. Do the stomp test to get the codes, then you can look them up here on the foum to give you an idea :)

Yeah, it could be a clogged fuel filter. I had one in my old car, couldn't get over 35mph without it bogging out.
Weird that there is no CEL, though.
Follow the stomp code advice and the like, and let us know what you find out.

im guessing Mass air flow sensor??
im guessing Mass air flow sensor??
Neg. MAF would result in rough idling.

my maf pooped at 5500+ and then eventually would not do any thing after 3500-4000rpm also you should check for vacuume leaks and the intake boot for cracks its pretty common. is it just under wide open throttle or can you slowly bring engine speed up past 4000?

I'm guesstimating fuel filter/pump, clogged injectors, fuel pressure regulator :dunno

ok sorry for the delay, here is an update on the car. Drove the car to work. Then i tried to come home and the cars idle started to bounce and then stalled. tried to resart but no go. Did the stromp test and said it was the MAF sensor. SO i forked out the doe ($270) and got a brand new one from bosch. Just put it in and still no go. I tried to reset the code by disconecting the battery. It reset the code but now flashes 1 short 1 Long 1 short 1 long. and still no start. I' m really frustrated. ANY more HELP would be apprecaited. Thanks.

Check fuel supply and crank position sensor(attached is the test procedure) as well.. Will it start with the throttle depressed a bit?

the car tries to turn over, but no dice. It starts for only about 2 seconds after sitting over night. then it doesn't start any more. just tries to turn over.
