So I'm down in New York City for training next week. I've never been there before, so I was wondering if anyone had any must see places or restaurants/pubs to try... My hotel is in midtown Manhattan.
I'll be in training from 8:30 - 5:30 every day, so my activities will be limited to nighttime.

Do you want Tourist trap places or off the beaten path places?

Off the beaten path. I'm much more of a traveler than a tourist.

ESPN sport bar, Harley Davidson restaurant, Empire State building, Greenwich Village, Littel Italy, Chinatown Canal street, Soho. Maybe catch a Broadway or an off broadway show.

If you're jewish you want to catch Jewtopia (off broadway show) non-jews may enjoy it but there is a bunch of 'jewish humor' i.e. if you have a jewish mother you'd understand.
they may also have a show still playing called Defending the Caveman. Histerical as well.
Food - Carnegie and Stage deli if you are a deli guy.
Bakery - Zarros (grand central terminal)
On 11th ave (somewhere between 40 and 45th) there is this awesome Irish pub.
Food is amazing and the beer on tap good too. It is an up and coming area (lots of new construction) and right down the street from the Convention Center (not too bad a walk from midtown). Worth checking out.
Also head down to 2nd ave and such for GOOD local's cuisine hangouts. I.e. great thai, chinese and the like.
For a REALLY nice meal try China Grill (also in midtown). It is a small chain but we don't have one in Boston yet - REALLY good i repeat myself.
Make sure you take a stroll through Central Park (when it is light out) - if you are driving and have a bike, rollerblades or something bring them just for the park!
You can also find some great Pubs and such over by columbia. but DON'T go north of columbia as you'll then be in harlem!
The upper west side (columbia area) is up and coming as well.
Other than that StealthBM hit some of the more major spots...
If you can make a late tour you may want to check out Ellis Island (while it is still around)...

The One and One restaurant/bar is across the street with the Nexus Lounge in the basement.

Ironically the first thing I thought of was to bring my Sox hat to jam on my head when I'm walking around to fit in with the crowd, and then I was like "oh wait, that could be bad for my health." :devillook
So it sounds like I want to hit up the Empire State building, Ground Zero, try to get a "real" Cuban sandwich around the lower east side, try to catch a show at broadway, times square, etc.

Awesome... sounds really good. I'm making a map and memorizing as much of manhattan as I can in addition to where some of these places are... I just wish that I had some time during the day to check more of it out.

If you can get over to the upper east Side I'd recommend it.

Eat at the Ninja Restaurant (ninjanewyork.com) ... good food, great entertainment.
You could also try your luck at Lucky Cheng's at 1st and 1st. I won't tell you what it is, you'd get mad, but omfg yeah, nevermind stay away unless you're drunk and need to point, laugh and make fun of others in a disturbed manner.
