View Full Version : Gas attendant puts 87 octane in my chipped 535i

Thanks be to NJ....

So I tell the guy to "fill it with 93"...he replies "Fill 93?"..."Yea" I say. Just like I say every 2.5 days at the same gas station.

I look over and the pump is going on 15+ gallons of 87 octane. I yelled at him to switch it to 93. He started mumbling something saying it was the OTHER guy who started the pump, when I knew it was him that I originally talked to (there's only 2 guys that work there and it wasn't the other guy!).

So am I gonna have any problems with the car now that I have a nearly fully tank of 87 octance and my BavAuto chip requires 91+ octane?

I noticed about a mile down the road the car became noticeable less powerful. It was like night and day. I was hoping I wasn't going to notice a difference, but I could definitely tell a difference.

i don't think it'll cause any problems. they recommend 91+ for optimal performance. but running 87 would just make your car slower thats about it.

Ruh-roh, you don't have any knock sensors. I'd keep topping your car off with 93, but good luck.

That sucks you can't pump your own gas. :rofl

If you hear knocking I'd recommend you put in a gallon or two of Toluene (114 octane) to balance things out.

Ugh, I was wondering about that...

M50s have knock sensors, and M30s don't? It won't adjust the timing then, so yeah I think just drive it softly.

Wait, add octane booster! That would prevent the detonation, should work right?

EDIT: DAMMIT Porsche! Beat me!

Octane booster will have a limited effect. I'd just see how it feels and don't drive it hard.

Or remove the chip?

you won't have any problems. It's the prolonged use of lower octane that will cause your engine to "ping". As long as you switch back immediately.

PorscheH6

Octane booster will have a limited effect.

That over the counter crap that boosts your octane by "Three Points" is just .3 of an octane. Toluene is stuff you can buy by the quart/gallon at a paint store that's 114 Octane in itself and already is a component in pump gas.

really don't think it's going to hurt anything.

no way. lower octane gas burns quicker immediately, which can lead to immediate detonation. higher the octane the slower it burns and colder it burns.

add a crap load of octane booster in there and limp the thing around until that tank is done with. Or, if you don't have a knock sensor, retard the timing if you can Or, put the old chip back in.

or do what my friend does for $75 for 5 gal :)

F**k. You guys are scaring me now. I can get CAM2 racing fuel down the street... 110 octane. Should I go for that in the morning? The only problem is I probably only have 1-2 gallons of space in the tank.

F**K.

Don't have the original chip.

F**K.

I should make those Indians pay for their mistake....CAM2 is not going to cheap.

I think CAM2 is leaded gasoline...Is that going to screw things up?

i dont think its a panicing issue, your car wont run to its full potential, and your chip wont react with the regular gas that is in it. thus it will run like a stock 535i.

F'it. I drained all the gas and put it in my other cars. That was fun.

Drove right to a gas station a minute ago and filled up with 93.
On the way there the CEL came on, so it definitely didn't like the gas that was in it.

Well what you did to prevent any problems wasn't at all a bad idea. But to clarify any other confusion, you're only going to have (minor) problems if you run 87 consistently. Chipped cars expect higher octane gas so if they don't get it, there's a "problem".. but only because the chip says so. Your car isn't going to kill over if you use a lower octane gas - I mean... it's GAS. It will combust to make your wheels spin. But with a chip, definitely stick to higher octane. It's more fun to drive that way :)

same thing happened to me! i just drove it hard until all the gas was used up. then put a bottle of techron in, and filled up with 93.

back to normal.

DON'T WORRY!

You guys are funny. One tank of lower octane isn't going to ruin shit. I can't tell you how many times the dumb ass at my Chevron has started pumping me 87. No need to worry. I have a NVM50 with a Dinan chip and I have ran 87 on several occasions. No problems. If you have an M30, I would worry even less. Those things will run on dog crap.

Just don't rape on it, and there will be nothing to worry about.

Nuff said. DO you really need something to worry about? Worry about funneling gas out of your car and getting a CEL because it wasn't done right in the first place.

Where do you guys even find full service gas stations in the first place. I haven't seen one in years. Didn't even know they still existed. I ran a tank of 89/93 blended with my newly installed chip. Got 27MPG highway at 75-80MPH, put about 440 miles on the tank just filled up with 93 this AM. Was going to find a Sunoco to try the Ultra 94 maybe next time.

It's against the law to pump your own gas in Oregon. I don't mind though.

Actually, it was illegal to pump your gas in ANY state until the states that allow you to passed laws for it. The more you know.

Yeah, it's dumb. I have to spend an extra 5 minutes waiting at the pump while Forrest Gump rings up 6 other cars. My 540i sits in Medford, OR. I get out and physically watch the doofus put the pump in and select the grade.

this would've been easier than sucking gas to empty the tank.

My sister lives in Medford. How ironic. Anyways, she told me that someone had cuaght a pump on fire, and killed like 3 ppl or something, and the fire chief, or whoever is in the big seat at the capitol made it illegal for ppl to pump there own gas

I don't remember quite where but it may have been in Texas. Full service was twenty cents more a gallon than self service.

an extra $4/tank for some illiterate hilljack to put in the wrong gas? damn, wish we had those around here.

Thats right, atleast around here.

Pulled in for gas at a random place the other day. Immediately some old guy came out. Full Service:eek::eek::eek::confused:eek::eek:??? Ive never seen full service before....except Vegas

Was like awesome till the guy said extra $.20 a gallon.

I remember full service in Oregon being the same price as self serve in Northern CA. That was 3 years ago.

Please, can you further explain how only the prolonged use of low octane gas will cause predetonation.

I would really love to hear it.

Well if you look at gas prices from Oregon, and the gas prices from Washington (self serve) you will notice that Washington is more expensive by about $.10. I thought it was cheaper to pump your own.....

Yeah me too... lower octane gas would likely detonate the second it's compressed, based on the chip's timing, fuel curves, etc...

Yeah, it sucks you can't pump your own gas but at least you have 93 octane. At my gas station we got 91. I think CA allows higher octane but the pumps might be kind of rare.

And 94 Ultra from Sunoco. Probably not a big seller nowadays, but I used to fill up with it on occasion.

I don't know why they don't let the average Joe pump fuel. I guess its for safety so you don't get poisoned from gas fumes or something? :eyecrazy But then the poor attendants get a concetrated exposure to the fumes.

Insurance.

The station pays MORE insurance when the general public pumps their own gas.

And when u have a state that DOES NOT let the public pump their own gas, the public sees lower gas prices in that state.

That's why PA gas is $0.20+ more per gallon than across the water in NJ.

One thing is better.... getting out of your car in sub zero temps or when it's pouring rain or snowing.
