97 328i making noise

i have a 97 328i, 5 spd, 127k miles. ive been noticing noise from the engine while driving, especially when decelerating, it just seems a big raspy(kind of like an american muscle, but not as bad), not like the smooth sound the bimmer makes...also on the highyway, i noticed a humming type noise i dont know what it could be. cel light is off

i know my description is not tat great, but i dont know how else to describe it. Any help/suggestions?

As far as humming goes, it could be your differential if only audible while moving.

Is it kind of a raspy sound coming from your exhaust pipe? It shouldn't be detrimental to your car... I heard it has something to do with rotting material in your tail pipes. Personally, I want the sound a little louder, it sounds sechsy ;)

and now the dumbest question of all

how do i fill the differential oil? is there a tank in hte engine?

(sorry i just bought this car, i just found out my battery was in hte trunk)
