I have done my own oil changes primarily because I do not put more than 4,000 miles are year on my MCS.

For those who use the dealer, what do you pay for an oil change there?
I was just curious.

I have it done by a shop in Rockville and they charge ~$50. They charge about the same to do my Z3 Coupe.

Wow. My friend just got his MC40 MCS done at a mechanic's shop. They did the "one ball" mod for $70 and the oil change for $25 and they provided the materials.

Oil filter $8

4qt of Synthetic Oil @$5.00ea = $20

$28 in materials if you do it yourself (in the Mini)

I wonder if the shop used synthetic oil or is in the business of losing money.

I only use Castrol Synthetic or Mobil 1 Synthetic in my BMWs and Mini.

Where are you getting the filter for $8? In the R56, it's $19.46 (Towson BMW/MINI), and $14.95 at minimania.com. And the oil is $6.48/quart at Advance Auto (Castrol 5w30).

That said, I changed the wife's oil yesterday, and it was phenomenally simple.

I don't have an R56 I have an R53.

I get my oil filters here

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mini-Oil-Filters-Mann-Qty-4-Cooper-Cooper-S-HU8161_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1 247QQcategoryZ33661QQihZ020QQitemZ300169114188QQrd Z1QQsspagenameZWD1V

They are Mann: made in Germany - they also make replacement filters for my 89 911 - I have used them for years in my German Cars and never had issues. My local independent Euro Car shop also uses them.

As far as Mobil 1 Syn 5w-30 - at my Walmart they are $5.85/qt or 5QT jug for $25.50 - I get it by the 5QT jug because I use the excess in my other BMW's so my net per qt is $5.10

I also generally find Adv Auto sells jugs, but they are 4qt. not 5qt.

Thanks... yeah, I think Mann makes the OEM filters for BMW anyhow. I got them for my R53s when we still had them. I don't shop at Wal-Mart, but my Advance didn't have the 4-quart jugs. Ah well. Thx for the info...

5-30 is kinda light for an r53 isn't it?

I put OEM oil & filters in my r56, it's still under warranty and it costs way more than the stuff you buy at walmart

5w30 is the factory recommendation for R53s as I recall. Btw, OEM oil is just rebranded Castrol Syntec. Says right under your hood MINI recommends Castrol.

I can get 5 quarts of Mobil 1 5w-30 or 0w-30 from a nearby wal mart super center for 22 bucks (I've seen them as low as 19 bucks around here - I guess no one buys them here or something)

Not sure if castrol syntec was higher but the Valvoline full synthetic was about the same at 23.98

The Mini in Mountain View, CA wanted like 120 for an oil change. I said no thanks.

If you buy your own oil and filter, Wal-Mart will do all the work of changing the oil and disposal of old oil, for $13.00. Not bad considering what it takes to do it your self.

My dealer wants $120.00

I've always run Amsoil in my other vehicles, and the mini and z4 will have it from the next change forward. Castrol is the only oil that has really let me down so I'm not going to rely on it anymore. My local car quest has amsoil for $6.00 a quart.
