I was on my way to work when i noticed the temp gauge rising, after cracking a head last summer i wasnt about too do that again. So i pulled over looked under the hood to hear hissing and see some steam/smoke from back of engine. Though it was over heating the coolant wasn't drained. I got a shops opinion and they said it was the heatercontrol valve cracked and it would solve my problem to replace that. is that a legitimate answer?? would it cause my car to over heat even though the coolant isnt empty? pleease answer back.

Not being familiar with the problem, I can only assume that if the shop said it would fix it, then it is probably safe to assume it will fix it. Just make sure it's a reputable shop.

yea i may just do that, getting it done and being on the side of the road 2 days later would be what im worried about. I was unsure as to how much the heater control valve controls the internal temperature of the car, thats why i looked here for thoughts.

The heater runs off the cooling system, if the valve is leaking (it's made of plastic) it would be draining the coolant from your cooling system, so yes it could/would cause overheating.
