A week or 2 ago my car backfired as I was trying to start it. It made a loud "pop" sound, let out a puff of smelly smoke, and then caught just as I noticed and turned it off. The intake hose on the ICV had popped off, so I think a cylinder fired when the valves weren't completely closed.

Everything's fine since then, but I kind of wonder if it's going to happen again. I searched and found another thread about something like this (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=760261&highlight=backfire+icv) . Unlike the guy in it I've only had it happen once. Should I be tightening my timing chain?

Oh, I should mention the CEL was on for like 5 minutes afterward but then went out.
