Andrew,
if you are serious about an E30 (and don't want to do any work) you'll need to spend a little more...

Kellie is a tech. Her car is pristine. You won't have to touch it. Oh! And it's an iX. You are welcome to drive mine and you'll understand why it is worth every penny she is asking.
She may be willing to talk price with you. I'm going to bump her thread in the E30 section.
I can tell you that here in NE I wouldn't trust ANY car especially after the THOUSANDS I have spent on mine...

Sexy E30....and probably worth it too. :)
I'd take an E30 to screw around with once the E36 is gone.

^to bad you can't shift it yourself.
That silver car looks pretty good for $4000, he is definitely talking the car up though and I wouldn't want to have a street car with a cage. If you can get to the bottom of the fishy business it looks like a good starting point.

Andrew,
If you get the one for $750 and the engine is crap I have that M40 engine at Owen's that is in MINT shape with tranny, driveshaft, etc etc.
It is plug and play into ANY e30 chasis out there.
Thing rips too for a four banger (if you drive it like you stole it).
Plus I have the exhaust, literally everything to convert a crap E30 'roller' to a euro 318i with an M40 - 30mpg and fun at high RPM.
Only thing I have sold is the rear diff, which was a 4.27O, a 4.10 LSD would work well in the car.
Essentially the one for $750 + $1000 for my motor and everything associated with it and you have a reliable E30 for under 2k in parts...

I believe that $750 car is an 88 325iX, so no go on the engine transplant.
But, for a stock rebuild, the M20 can be rebuilt for the same price as a 3 day old box of doughnuts and a half-empty tin of Copenhagen.

I found a 1987 silver blue/tan leather "florida" 325e 5 speed, in a auto rag. It's on a used car lot in cranston. I am going to call the dealer and arrange to check it out tomorrow. No idea of miles or condition beyond picture in rag. Asking price $2500.
Ideally I would love to find a mint-ish 1991 318i 4dr but I will consider any rust free e30 5 speed at this point in my search.

Andrew,
I warn you on FL cars. From what I have seen maintenance is shoddy at best. I have had bad experiences from BMW dealers with inability to work on my cars, have heard terrible stories about lack of mechanical ability on our vehicles etc.
And second a 325e is about the worst E30 you could possibly purchase. It is a pig of a car that can't get out of its own way.
I would keep searching for the "right" car.
They are out there...

even if I could get it for $1500. do you think it would be a lousy winter beater?
or maybe this 318?

that 88 ix for $750 wasn't all that bad. Two door. got a little bit of rust. pretty decent rims. they aren't bmw, i don't think. Does need the bottom end redone though. I just didn't want another project.
I drove by it about 2 weeks ago. 231,000 miles. The owner thinks its a rod knocking and hasn't driven it since the sound started. I think its mendon road in woonsocket. I don't remember the number though.

In this case I think the 325e is a better car. The 318i I believe is an M10, not an M42 like later ones. I would run the vin with someone to see if it has a limited slip (which you will want for an E30 winter beater).
If the 318i was a M42 and had a limited slip I'd jump on that one (especially for the price).
At the same token if the '84 318 is in better shape you can get an M42 or an M20 (non 'e') complete for peanuts.
Depends on what you want out of the car.
In my shoes I'd look at the 318, try to talk the guy down as much as possible and then drop my M40 into it.

That 87 looks to be a nice car, I have been looking at the ad for a few weeks. As long as you get some good snow tires, an open diff car will work fine in the snow. I drove mine all last winter like that and never got stuck.
There is also a 86 325e in Warwick that I looked at awhile back. White over tan with about 140k iirc. It was in pretty good shape and the owner seemed like he would go down to 1k or less.
