I just picked up a 06 330xi on Friday. I love it. Saturday I was driving behind a building with my radio off and noticed a "scraping" type noise coming from under the car. I did a few different tests, apply brakes, no brakes, different gears etc. I cannot really narrow it down. Not sure if it is brakes or dust sheild or something else.
Has anyone experienced this? I am probably going to take it back to the dealer next week but was hoping it is an easy fix.
I may take the wheels off to clean them and double check all is well.
Thanks.

Did you jack up the car to see if you are dragging anything? Next, I would individually take off the wheels and look for excessive brake pad wear. I would also check each wheel well for debris to see if something got thrown up in there.

Nothing dragging. I am going to take off each wheel now. I am hoping it is something dumb like a stick or something. It does however show up when I brake or coast. Does not seem like it happens in first gear though. 2nd & 3rd i hear it.

Had the similar grinding on my 07 335i. The dealer said it was buildup between the rotors and brakes. They scraped it off and the noise went away. The service advisor suggested that if it comes back (and he thought it might) to find an open stretch of parking lot and do a couple of hard runs in reverse and then brake hard to help remove the buildup.
So far, I haven't had to do that and it's been probably 10 months.

You are right, it was a bunch of gunk on the rotors. The car was a pre-owned and may have been sitting for a bit. The rotors dont look to be in the best shape. I took some brake cleaner and cleaned it pretty good. Seems much better now.
