It doesn't look like it - my 97 M3 didn't have one either.

Was it rather haphazard which years and models got the cdv?

I think the 96+ all got them, but most owners remove them. The next owner buys the car and never has any idea of the what the previous owner had done.

So how can you tell if you do have the CDV on, without looking for the part itself I have a concept of what it does but cant really pin point what the difference would be in terms of having one or not (through driving)?

when you bang a hard fast shift to second or third gear at or near redline in a car equipped with a CDV, it momentarily feels as if your clutch is slipping because the CDV slows full clutch engagement...

Yeah I have a clutch with about 6,000 miles on it and nearly freaked out when I did one of my first full throttle pulls and it slipped into second... I was so confused and freaked out. I thought something was breaking on it then it grabbed and I was still very confused.
Read about this on accident soon after and decided its something I need tog et done. Sure would make you look like an idiot at a drag strip or when showing off. cant imagine how this would effect times.

I had taken out my cdv earlier today and it's a world of a difference. When I was doing my 0-60 runs with the cdv in a few months back, I'd drive 1st up to 6k and shift to second. On second, the tachometer would always stay constant around 4.5-5k rpm, slipping and not exactly going faster, until I let go of the gas.
Gives a smoother ride, amazingly. Was well worth it.

As stated earlier, it was not present on any cars before 96, so save yourself the trouble.
