I just bought a 08 335XI which just turned 1000 miles (1256 to be exact) and is starting a very concerning characteristic. For some reason almost every other start it cranks over very rough. Sometimes it takes up to 10 seconds to finally crank over. Is this normal during the break in period of these engines?
I don't have any lights on the dash... it just sounds like it's trying hard to turn over... which not to be picky... shouldn't happen in a new car...
Also should I be concerned about the starter prematurely wearing?
I apologize for my questions in advance as this is my first time with BMW... I was an american made man until FSHOWCARS slapped some sense into me.

I have no exact idea, maybe it was driven poorly during the break-in period?

Shouldn't happen.
You should try the dealer. Your car has a "warranty", which includes diagnosing and solving problems like this during the car's warranty period.

I did this morning... they said that it wasn't something they could diagnose unless a light is turned on the vehicle. I also think it has to do with the engine being cold... as I just went outside it took a bit to crank over... then I got lunch.. on my way back it was fine... I still might take it into the dealer.

What you're describing isn't normal, cold start or not. Get it checked out.

Bullcrap. They can diagnose things without a dash light turning on; sounds like you have a lazy dealer... take it to a different one and then complain to BMWNA.

I called the dealer back and the service manager answered. He said he's heard of an intermittant issue with the high flow fuel pump distributing too much fuel upon startup. They are going to look at it at it on June 9th... thats the first time they have a 335XI loaner available for my use and that I'm not in a different state.
I am assuming I don't need to be concerned with anything in the mean time. I only drive about 280 miles a week....

Congrats on the new car. And that definitely doesn't sound right; my 14-year-old car cranks just fine in about 2 sec. Yours should take nowhere near 10 sec, even if it's -10F outside. Hope everything works out.

i have seen a few of these engines with similar problems.. and every time has been the high pressure pump... so i think they are on to something

The only time that I had an issue with my '08 335xi was cold start. It would take 5-10 seconds sometime to start the car....and a couple of times it did not start at all. But those days were -45C (no windchill effect).

the only way i would go outside to start my car in -45c weather is if i were going to drive somewhere warm. that is amazing.

Life in Canada doesn't stop even at -45. Now if it gets to +45, then chances are more people will be staying home :help.
