So, my oil change mileage indicator says I should change my oil at 9000 miles, down from 15 thousand miles. I have 8300 miles on the odometer, and took the car in for service. My mileage typically drops at the end of the month, and thought I would be proactive about changing my oil.
The BMW service shop said that I didn't need my oil changed after downloading the key. When I asked for clarification, they said that the oil mileage reader is actually operated by fuel flow, not a chip in the engine. They said to bring the car in when the service icon pops up.
Anyone else ever deal with this issue, or does this sound like BS?

They won't do it until it is exactly 1 year on the clock or the oil service icon shows it is due. It is safe to go a few hundred miles after the icon appears so you should be ok. I have my appointment booked for next monday which is 1 day after my car's anniversary, they would not do it any earlier (mine still shows a few thousand km left so the 1 year interval kicks in).

Yeah, I wanted my first oil change a few months after getting the car. They wouldn't do it.

I pointed out to them that the only paperwork I ever found said that the oil would be changed when the computer said to or within a 12 month period. So at 12 weeks, I was within the first 12 months.

They persisted in saying I was interpreting it wrong and I didn't care enough to really push it...

A friend of mine works at a Audi dealership and he told me that they tell the customers they only have to change there oil every 15,000 miles when in fact they need to do it every 9,000. He said they make money when the old oild screws up the engine.

Common sense says 15k is to long. How often you change oil and filter should not be governed by mileage, but by how the engine is used.

The service interval is based on a lot more than just fuel flow...

aannnddd BMW is paying for it...
aannddd BMW puts a little bit of engineering into their cars so I am sure it will be fine if they say it will be fine
