...for a week this Summer, are there areas I should look for? Ones I should avoid? Any info helps.

Alton Bay is nice. Avoid the weirs (go to see it but avoid renting there).

Also try Meredith.

I like Meredith personally. It is quieter but close enough to the weirs and easy to get to.

Weirs Beach is the tourist trap of the area.

Kids are coming? Definitely look for something in Meredith. Alton bay is nice but a little further away from the weirs. As said above it is the Tourist trap, but it has things to do and there are things by it to do (mini golf, go carts, etc).

In Meredith you have quiet like Alton Bay but you are closer to 93 and then also about 10 minutes from the Weirs.

If you are renting a boat or jet ski you can also boat over to the weirs from meridith. Alton bay is a bit farther away...

Yes but Alton Bay has Half-Moon Lake which is $$$. I went to summer camp in Alton Bay for a few years :D

I actually didn't realize you had kids. I've never been to the area but was looking for a reason to go. Have fun with the family!
