is there much to be gained with a performance cam on a m30, assuming stock everything else? something like a 284 degree cam?
educate me please

I would like to know as well. I have a feeling the gains aren't gonna be much though since the m30 seems very hard to build N/A

Redfive had a built NA motor at one point, and I believe Hari has one too. Ask them about NA motor builds.

I don't think there's going to be anything amazing, it'll shift the powerband higher but doubt it will significantly increase it. Ireland Engineering has a 284 regrind, I've briefly considered trying it out.

Short answer is "no". I have learned that NA mods need to be accompanied by tuning in order to get the most out of them. I love my car, but it really needs to be tuned to get more than the 200/212 it's making now.
If you are doing the work yourself and are in the head anyway then go for it. If not then don't worry about it.

That's one hell of a sig Hari :D MS in the future for you?

I bought Goathumper's MegaSquirt2, but then sold it to CleverTD before tuning it because I thought I was selling my car. Since, no one bought my car I'm back to needing a tune again. :)

Have you asked Mike if he'd do it?

Oh, I don't have the Megasquirt anymore (sold it to clevertd). Does Mike have a chip burner for tuning Motronic 1.3 or something?

Indeed he does. Or, at least, I know he does E36 and E34 M50 OBD-I tuning. I'd ask first.

The cam isn't worth it. Dollar wise anyways. Maybe if you have your factory re-ground, but the aftermarket ones are VERY disappointing as far as money vs performance goes.

I only had a 272 cam. With tuning I had slightly more hp, but less torque. I basically found the whole NA experience to yield little power for large amounts of cash.
Hari, do you want to try the Autothority chip that I had custom burned? Its just sitting around doing nothing because I don't have that setup anymore. I would just check the AFR, after installing it.

I don't know as much about the "Big Six" as I do about the Twin Cam M50...but I'm sure the basics hold true...
Camming is a VERY expensive endeavour...yoiu have the cost of the Cam...but you're also gonna want some other additions like uprated valve springs and followers...and adding a cam isn't gonna do too much for you unless you're also willing to have the head reworked for better flow and bigger valves...
...if you're gonna do Naturally Aspirated right...it's nearly as expensive as forced induction...a bit less power...but tends to hold together a little better...and as a bonus...anyone spying under the hood isn't gonna see anything more than stock goodies (unless you "dress" your engine bay)...

Sure! Anything is better than what I have now. Thanks I'll shoot you a PM with my address.

Robin, on the "other e34" board noticed modest but pleasant results with a Schrick 284. He needed a new cam anyway due to a broken rocker arm so the difference in cost for stock vs regrind vs Schrick was down in the noise after the machine shop got done with it.

Down in the noise?
Ok, well maybe a little more than chump change. $190 for a regrind (Ireland), $194 stock (Autohausaz), $486 Schrick (Turner). But if I already had to take my head off for other reasons, it would be tempting to pay the difference for a Schrick.

I think you misunderstand, I don't know what "down in the noise" means.

Sorry, my bad, "down in the noise" as in signal-to-noise ratio on a scope trace, implying the additional cost for a Schrick 284 vs stock is small (in my opinion) compared to the overall cost a head rebuild.

Thanks for the link. interesting thread which really makes me want to consider it more but I know the gains aren't worth it and I have already spent enough on parts that are going to be giving me minimal gains.
