The ASA FR1 arrived and heres the scoop

The new track wheels I wrote about in the previous thread arrived today and here the story. The wheels are 17x9 with a 48mm offset. They are a two piece wheel. The center section is welded to the rim like a forgeline. I bought them with the tire so I had a chance to weigh them and was pleasantly surprised. The wheels weighed in at exactly 18lbs each. This is damn good for a 9 inch wide wheel, so all you guys looking for a track wheel at a reasonable price or a street wheel this maybe the wheel for you. BTW I attached some pics to show that the pic on tireack does these wheels no justice. I still plan on having the centers painted black and leaving the lip polished though.

damn, those are nice. so with a 48mm offset, would you need a spacer to clear the front struts with 245/40 hoosier's or 255/40's victoracers? if so, what size spacer?

hey quickm3 did you check out their website?
    http://www.asaalloywheel.com/asawhee...echn_index.htm

if they are welded, like you say then they are a 2piece forged rim.

BJO the track wheels I use now are a 17x8 with a 35mm offset and I use no spacer, so I'll probably either go with the 12 or 15mm spacer. I'm going to try both.

Damn.... those wheels are nice looking, and the price is RIGHT!

Off topic... BJO and quickm3, where's the best place to get the front spoiler lips that you two have on your cars? I like the way they look!

No not yet. I just go the wheels back from the paint shop today, and next week i'll have the hoosiers mounted. Once they are mounted and I do some test fitting I'll determine which spacer I want to use. I'll keep you posted.

I'm more interested in hearing about the rear fitment. The fronts are just a matter of the right spacer, but the rear may be more problematic.

Ahhhh, Jeff old boy, shouldn't be a big deal. Maybe some lip massaging and lots of neg camber, but I know they will fit.
I just bought the same wheels. I am going to run 15mm front and 10mm rear spacers. The front will be perfect and the rear will be very aggressive :

    Rob,

Well actually, I have no doubt the *wheels* will fit.

I was just thinking that with such a high offset, big, meaty 245 Hoo Hoos (I'm assuming 245's as Quick mentioned Hoo Hoos), that you'll get some serious rubbage (is that a word?) along the inside of the wheel well, against the chassis.

So, it would seem that some 5mm spacers would be required, along with some extra work with a dead blow hammer.

For some reason, I remember reading somewhere that spacers shouldn't be used in the rear. But, when you think about it, I cannot see why they cannot be used.

Now, here's the problem I see: 245 hoo hoos may work with a 5mm rear spacer, but what about more reasonably priced and durable track tires like 255 Victos or Toyos? I'm guessing that a 5mm spacer out back will not be enough, but 10mm will be *too* much with serious fender work beyond rolling.

In a nutshell, I think that such a high offset wheel with the extra 1/2" of wheel width may conspire to give some rear fitment issues with big meats.

What do you think o' wise one?

I'd say it's no problem at all. I've used two different 17x9 wheels on my car with the 255/40-17 Kumhos, and the 245/40-17 Hoosiers. One set has a 42.5mm offset, the other has a 45mm offset. Rear fenders are rolled. The 42.5mm offset wheels work just fine with either tire, without a spacer. The 45mm wheels work, but are a little close on the inside of the wheel well - I use a 5mm spacer and they fit just fine.

With the 17x9 ET48 wheels, I'd think that a 5mm spacer would make them fit perfectly. The 5mm spacer would make the wheel the equivalent of a 43mm offset, which should be just right.

Perhaps it's just me, since I have a sedan, but stock 41 mm offset wheels, 8.5" width, with 255's caused rubbing on both sides of the fenderwell. Enough to remove portions of the undercoating and polish the metal underneath, even after some wailing on everything with a dead blow hammer.

I'm with Jim, the 5mm spacer will be just perfect I think. I guess we'll know for sure by the end of next week.

    Hey guys,

I guess the tricky part is the big Hoosiers. I have run 17x9" et32mm on the rear of my car w/ 235/40/17and it was fine. I know I can also run *most* 245's on 9's with a 40mm offset. From there I am still quite sure I'll be able to fit 9's with a 38mm offset and street 245's, which is why I suggested a 10mm spacer. Maybe those massive Hooseris will be a problem. The other sad part is that 10mm is the smallest hub-centic spacer avail for our cars. The 5mm's don't leave much hub for the wheel to sit on.

    I will know soon too

    RHL,

BTW, report back on the Goodyear GS CS tires after you've had a chance to use them on your big rims. I'm guessing it'll be a while since you are likely buried under the white stuff right now.
