    Locking gas cap replacement.

The early Z's did not have central locking integrated into the fuel door, so they had lockable gas caps. The gas cap was missing when I bought the car, so the stealer opted to replace it with a standard, non-locking version.

My question is, can the dealer just order a replacement that is keyed to match the rest of the locks? Has anyone here had to do this?

Yes, I did it when my cap failed during inspection, it was pricey though, I dont remember how much, but I was shocked. Just give them your vin.

    No more BMWs :(
The sucker is keyed to the door locks. My stupid rubber leash broke from age, so me being me, I had to look into getting it fixed or replaced. I could never get a straight answer from the dealer, and I could not figure out how to get the cap apart to get the lock out.

...but that car is being sold, so I no longer have to worry about it.

(just an example of the extreme ocd nature that I unfortunately possess.)

My gas cap was stolen and when I called the dealer they said the locking caps are no longer available, so I could only replace it with a non locking cap.

Tischer lists the cap at $42.44. That seems almost too cheap... I'll give them a try.

My order hasn't come in yet. I got another confirmation email on Thursday, so maybe that means my order has shipped.

So when do you give them your VIN number? I saw nothing on the web site about it.

They ask for it with every order, I think. There was a box for it in the checkout form.

Thanks! The VIN entry was a page past where I was comfortable going until I ordered. (had to enter CC# first).

I went ahead and ordered. I'm getting tired of smelling raw gas and I'd like to be able to take a turn with a little bit of spirit w/o the thought that I'm dumping $4 on the ground.

Why do your wheels look like they have rivets?

3-piece wheels need bolts to hold the pieces together.

I'll bet there is a way to take the gasket off of a non-locking gas cap and put it your original locking cap

My Roady failed inspection because of the gas cap seal. Instead of buying a new cap I picked a new seal at the dealer for $6.00 and resolved the problem...

Hi all - I visited Tischer to buy a locking gas cap for my '02 M Roadster, but they don't seem to list one for my year.

I note that if I put in '01 or earlier, they list a pricier ($58.80 - likely locking) gas cap.... but only a cheap ($13.68 - likely not locking) cap for the '02 year.

Do you guys know whether there was a change between '01 and '02 that would have changed the design of the locking gas cap?

Or should an '01 gas cap work in an '02 M Roadster?

Any one have any experience with this issue?

    Thanks...

I imagine the price difference is just in the lock as you stated...

I received my cap today. It's the correct, locking version, and is keyed to match my car. Not bad for $42. Makes me wish I had done it long ago!

You should not have a locking gas cap. After 4/99, all Z3's had the fuel door tied into the central locking system. When you lock your doors, the fuel door locks too.

Ahhh! From the picture it looked like you have Roadstars. Upon closer inspection they appear to be different wheels. 18" GT3's?

Lost mine as well and went through the dealer to replace. Took a couple of weeks 'cause they had to order it from Germany with the programmed key code (hence the VIN requirement)...and it cost about $60...ugh, but perfect OEM fit and works exactly as advertised.

    Cheers,

Thanks Vinci, you're absolutely right. Given I've never had to unlock it in the past year I've owned the car, I simply assumed it was not a locking system. I am pleasantly surprised

Cost about the same from these other people after their $12+ in shipping!!! I HATE companies that hide their prices in shipping even when they are upfront in the cost. These ass hats (www.mileoneparts.com (Tischer BMW)) hid their prices until they actually ship the part. Seriously, it's a fricking fuel cap it. They can eat a Snicker's out of my colon. If I'd of known their practices, then I'd of paid a total of $10 more to buy from my local dealer than order from them.

I am appreciative of the information from my fellow members, but I'm not a fan of that vendor....their part better be right or ....well, guess I'll be less pleased with them.

Of course I remember MDex, I used to be an active member.
