The windshield washer nozzles have heaters? (Yes they do!)

I'm diagnosing a leaky and inoperable windshield washer fluid issue. I've diagnosed four or more separate issues. (The tank itself leaks. Multiple hose leaks. The hose connection at the firewall (below the secondary air pump) to the rear nozzle was disconnected, and one of the rear nozzles was clogged.) Things are working for the most part now after "reawakening" the pump by connecting it directly to the remote battery terminal. This work has brought me to one question on the system that I can't figure out.

What are the wires going to the main nozzles for? Are those for nozzle heaters, or some type of valve maybe? I'm stumped and curious.

Yes, heated nozzles (temperature sender "disc" @ RH front corner, under bumper).

Thank you. I believe I have this whole thing sorted out then (I will have to undress the hood soon for body work as well). Now I just have to navigate realoem.com to find the right replacement parts. I found the right section, but it is non-trivial as to what is what, since it looks so completely different in the images from what I have in my car and the hose that goes to the rear isn't even hinted at. =(

Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem though. Hopefully this thread has answers: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1780623

    Thanks again Randy.

The replacement part on realism.com is not heated. Ask me how I know. They are not even a direct fit replacement. I ended up just cleaning mine up and reusing them. Still have the replacements if you want them.

Thanks for the offer Wertles, but my nozzles are just about the only part of the system that is still working 100% fine. =]

    Several
The nozzle on the firewall (for the rear nozzle) can easily come unhooked and drain the tank out. I think I put a zip-tie on as a fix lol.

I noticed mine connected with a 90° fitting at the firewall, but the tube came at the firewall directly. I rerouted the tube a bit so that it did come at the firewall at a 90° angle and that should help. Also unclogging one of the rear nozzles should also release pressure there. If I have to, I'll resort to more drastic measures.

Hey Wertles, did you see the $3 nozzle and the $37 nozzle listed on realoem.com?

    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...71&hg=61&fg=45

    02 .... Spray nozzle .......................... 2 .......................... 61601384859 .... $3.27
    02 .... HEATED SPRAY NOZZLE .... 2 .... 03/1997 .... 61668376011 .... $37.35

It looks like the cheap one is not heated, and the expensive one is the heated one. Did you see both those options when ordering yours? Just curious. Are the heated ones no longer available maybe?

I did not see that one. Thebmwpartstore.com even has it in stock. Nice.

I thought that might be the case. I've had my fair share of overlooking things or not being able to find them because of some weird issue or another on realoem.com. Maybe the VIN you entered (if you did enter one) was too early of a production?

    Glad I could help.

I just ended up cleaning and readjusting the heated ones that came on the car. I thought the ones I ordered for cheap were direct fit replacement but not heated. These not only were not heated but did not have the hook ups oriented in the same direction as the originals so it was going to take some additional parts to make them work. I could care less about the heaters since the car is stored for cold weather but I didn't feel like screwing around finding more hose and 45 and 90 degree fittings.

My 98 doesn't have any wires going to the nozzles, so I presume they are the not-heated type.

If you don't have the valve - and your water tube goes straight to the sprayer - I'll bet someone removed them.

This check valve goes between the tube and the sprayer - at least it does on mine:
