I’m pleased to bring some good news to coupe owners that replicas of the OEM spoiler for the hatchback as well as a modified version for those with rear wiper delete will now be offered for sale – made in America.
Since I’m not selling these myself, and will make no money from the sale of them I will not make any guarantees about the fit and quality of them. I have received first articles back from the manufacturer of each version and the OEM replacement appears to me to fit exactly like the original. The modified version has been fitted to my car and did require some work by my bodyshop to get it to fit properly. I’ve communicated the details on this back to the manufacturer; the issue was easily understood and corrected. So going forward both versions offered by them will be the same and should fit the same as the OEM parts. I would still recommend professional installation. More on how to install later.
Several months ago, in the interest of getting a modified version made for my car without the notch in the middle (I've removed the rear wiper) as well as having replicas of the both the original and no-notch version made available for other coupe owners I paid a lot of money for an original and sent it off to have the replicas made. Just recently they came through and sent me one of each. I’ve since had the no-notch modified version painted and installed on my car and will be able to point anyone interested in buying either version of the replica spoilers to the source shortly.
I will not be making a penny on the sales of the replicas, the agreement I made with the source was that they would have exclusive rights to sell them and I would get the word out for them that they have them available for sale. Once they have them listed for sale on their site I will provide the link. The source/shop is located in the US and has reproduced the spoilers in fiberglass and can offer both versions in carbon fiber as well. I don’t have pricing from them yet but it’s my understanding that they will be offering both versions in fiberglass for around $400 to $450. Since they have already made the molds delivery should be 2-3 weeks made to order, no volume discounts being offered. They are offering these as a standard off the shelf type product.
Spoiler Installation Instructions
Installation: Professional Installation recommended.
The units are made in fiberglass and are finished in gel coated. Pre-paint preparation is required like any other fiberglass aftermarket part. The amount required depends on the level of perfection desired, no more or less than any other part. Like the original offered by BMW the two end pieces have one each 6mm female insert in them, the center piece has four inserts. They will accept a 6mm bolt or stud which can be inserted from / through the sheet metal from the inside of the car once mounting holes have been located and drilled. All three pieces should also be mounted with double sided tape as was the original. For cars with & without a rear wiper, the end pieces can be mounted quite easily. With the tail light assemblies removed you can reach in the area above the tail light area to insert the bolt into the spoiler or attach a nut if a stud was used. For the center piece; those without a rear wiper will find that all four holes are easily reachable with the hatch trim removed from inside the hatch. For those with rear wipers still in place it may be necessary to remove the wiper assembly to access the two end mounting points. The spoilers do create down-force; therefore it’s recommended that they be installed using bolts or studs with nuts to prevent them from accidentally detaching from the car at high speeds. Attaching with ONLY double sided tape could be risky and has not been tested.
The original came with studs, and actually weighed slightly more than the replicas, I'm not exactly sure what the orignal was made of perhaps ABS plastic but it was equally rigid as well. Point being mounting either would be the same, my guess is that you could mount either with only double sided tape, but having said that I think BMW was playing it safe by incorprating studs for mounting, the spoiler does create downforce and it would be unfortunate for one to fly off at 150 mph.
Driving impressions: I had my car out shortly after installing the spoiler on it. I had made no other changes to the car other than installation of the spoiler.
There is a definate improvement in the high speed handling manners of the car with the spoiler on it. I managed to test the car on an empty highway at a top speed of 140mph for a reasonable distance. Prior to installing the spoiler the car was noticable twitchy at this speed and would be prone to some nervousness when crossing the crown of the highway - moving from the slow to high speed lanes. With the spoiler intalled the car felt much more stable. The nevousness has almost been completely eliminated and the car is tracking much better now. How it affects each car of course will depend on a variety of things; suspension, tires & wheels, mainly. I can say with complete objectiveity that on my car there has been a noticible and definate improvement in handling at speed.
Pictues below are of the Original Style with the notch for the rear wiper, off the car and the "no-notch" version modified for use with cars that have "rear wiper delete. I think that with a little innovation you could use a piece plastic and RTV to seal the hole from the inside for the wiper and easily convert a car to "wiper delete" using the modified version. It would not be wise to do it from the outside as there is a water drain channel in the middle of both versions to allow water to pass through and drain through the spoilers rather than being trapped on top. Sealing the wiper hole from the outside would obstruct this channel.

That car has awesome paint; about a year ago, I saw it for the first time...
(somewhere, I must have a picture after I washed it...)

and now it has a OEM style rear spoiler to go with the rear wiper delete the way BMW should have done it from the get go - IMO
Randy,
Best to you and family for the New Year.

Didn't you recently sell an OEM hatch spoiler on Ebay claiming that you were selling your car?

Dan,
I did receive the spoiler and test fit it on the car. The fit seemed perfect to me. Much better than most aftermarket fiberglass parts I have had in the past. I have never owned an original BMW version of this spoiler but would not think the fit could be better.
ostrich egg paintjob
These look great but will they improve performance at speeds lower than 140mph (which is where you said you felt the difference)?
Most track days I attend have straightaways too short to get the Coupe much over 130mph.
Glad to hear your pleased! I thought the same.
I almost was going to spray mine flat black with Plastic dip and intstall in myself but there I was having some other paint work done to fix a real minor flaw in the paint job so I had it painted to match. Figured I could always try the plastic later and see how it looks since it's not permanent and peels off easy.
Downforce created by any spoiler is going to be directly related to the velocity of air moving over it. think of a wing on a plane and take off speed. The fasted you go the more force applied.
And if you're on a slow track where you're only at 10O+ on the straights a spoiler could actually slow your lap times. To create downforce requires drag, it takes horsepower to push a spoiler through the air. For high horsepower cars it's a don't care. A lot of guys bought the e36 M3 lwt rear spoilers only to find they went slower. It did create downforce but also a ton of drag with the two thick vertical supports. I had one and went to an aftermarket unit that was much improved.
On tracks that have more high speed sweepers and fewer slower turns like Watkins Glen well designed wing can impove lap times dramatically by improving grip through the majority of turns. But on a short twisty track with slow corners a spoiler won't help much. Keep in mind you shouldn't really need it on the staights. Having said all this I definately noticed a difference on the street and do expect to notice a difference on the track as well.
