Is there a post that shows EXACTLY what parts needed to change the oil on a 96 1.9?
Gaskets, crush rings etc.
Also what is the general consensus on going over to Synthetic at 130,000 miles
BMWCCA # 12660 (got my 35 year pin in the mail)
PCA 30 Years..........
X5 06 3.0 Saphire Black/Tan-- Ours
Z 3 01 2.5/5 Topaz/Tan (was 96 Silver)-- Mine
911 (997S) 06 Cab/Tip Guards/Black -- Hers/Ours?
Just this oil filter kit like the picture below:
On my 1.9 w/108k miles - I use Mobil1 Synthetic 5w/30
Do you recommend to replace the filler plug, and is there a crush ring?
It's been a LONG time since I changed my own oil, we've had mostly newer cars lately and I usually get free or greatly reduced price oil change offers .....
The Isuzu goes to a quick change place.....

No you should be fine with reusing the old plug...just replace the crush ring...everything you need comes in the oil filter kit....You will need a tool to take off the oil filter housing cap...dunno what size it is but you can pick one up at advance or from bavauto.....dont over tighten the drain plug...I did this once and had to swap the oil pan.....also do not overtighten the oil filter housing...its plastic and it will break...(also had to replace)
54760 is the part number for the filter wrench over at bavauto...its a life saver
Yes on Synthetic...its never too late
yeah. make sure its the right kind of crushed ring. my local autozone ran out of them, and so i got some copper one..and my leaks. D: Bentley suggests you torque the drain bolt with 18 ft/lb (25Nm)
For what it's worth, a few weeks ago I changed the oil in my 1.9 for the first time (my first time, not the car's.) I bought the filter from the dealer and it came with all the o-rings and the crush washer as previously noted. My car came with no service history, so I have no idea what oil has been in there (69k miles on the odo.) I used BMW 5w30 full synthetic and I now have a few slow leaks where I had none before. I always heard rumors about this happening (switch from dino oil to synthetic causing leaks, but didn't think it could hapen to me...)
The engine likes the oil, feels smooth, runs great. I just have to get back under there and figure out why it's leaking!
All you need is everything in the kit found HERE

I have never noticed that an engine felt any different or ran any better on one kind of oil or the other.
Maybe you bought a used car that had leaks from its old seals. Or maybe the engine had work done on it and that caused the leaks.
I have used synthetic for almost 30 years, but not all the time. I switch back and forth depending on what is on hand, or how long I intend to leave it in, and sometimes I top up synthetic with dino.
I was an Amsoil dealer in the 1980s and heard the rumors then about synthetic oil either destroying oil seals, or dissolving dino gunk that was sealing the seals.
I am surprised such talk is still around after decades of debunking and rebutting, like:
You could drain the synthetic from your 1.9, leave the filter alone, and put in BMW 15W-40, about $6/quart, and see if the leaks stop.Myth #5 - Synthetic oil causes engine leaks. Synthetic motor oils eat gasket material and cause engines to leak. Synthetic motor oils affect engine seals and result in excessive oil leakage. Synthetic oil can’t be used on high-mileage engines. Synthetic and synthetic blend motor oils cannot be used in older or high-mileage vehicles.
Fact: Synthetic oils do not cause engine oil leaks. Deteriorated and hardened seals and gasket material cause engine oil leaks. If the seals are already leaking with conventional motor oil, they will leak with synthetic oil. If the seals are in good condition, synthetic oils may be used in high-mileage engines.

buy the Mann oil filter and it will come with the right crush washer and gaskets. Buy the oil filter wrench from Bavauto. I bought the one from autozone and it didn't work.
